Villagers performed live in session today for 6 Music DJ Lauren Laverne.

Conor O'Brien, who also appeared on Paul Weller's latest album, told Lauren about using samples for the first time on his own new record, The Art Of Pretending To Swim, which arrived last Friday.

It includes a sample of US jazz musician Donny Hathaway "having a party in his studio".

"I thought we weren't gonna get the rights to it," explained the Irishman.

"So, I was getting ready to go to a party in Dublin with my friends with a bit of Guinness, which wouldn't have sounded as cool."

    Listen above.

The Scots singer songwriter turns exotic dander in the video for his new track Grace.

The former Newbie Tuesday artist supported Sam Smith earlier this summer but we are still waiting for his debut album, to follow on from last year's Bloom EP.

Bassist and former member Peter Hook and the Manchester Camerata are to revisit the band's songs for a performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 5 July 2019.

The setlist will come from the band's two albums.

According to a press release, it's the first time an original member of the group has participated in such a project.

Hook - who is producing the show - said: "Post punk is already dramatic and this will accentuate that and take it to another performing and emotional level.“

"I know the band’s canon will be treated with great reverence and care, enthusiasm and passion as the originals were."

The Camerata - a chamber orchestra - are perhaps best know for their reworking of classic songs played at Manchester's legendary Hacienda club.

Tickets go on sale on 5 October.

The Wirral band are back with another hit of politically-charged rock 'n' roll poetry.

Produced by James Skelly of The Coral, Resister Reprise sees frontwoman Louisa Roach tackle NHS issues, immigration and capitalism head on, over a pulsating fuzz rock beat.

The track is taken from their forthcoming second album Revolution Of Mind, which is out next month, when they'll also support The Coral on their UK tour.

US college rockers Weezer's have recruited the services of Weird Al Yankovic and a load of doppelgangers in the video for their inexplicable hit cover of Toto's Africa.

The satirist plays the role of frontman Rivers Cuomo in the video, which recreates the visuals for Weezer's 1994 track Undone (The Sweater Song).

The cover came about in May after persistent requests from fans and gave the Los Angeles band their first hit on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for a decade.

Goat Girl, external arrive at their "favourite festival" Green Man straight off the back of an AIM Awards nomination for UK Breakthrough of the Year.

The award, which will ultimately go to rising Midlands soul star Jorja Smith, places the south London guitar band among the likes of Sophie, AJ Tracey and Idles as officially one of the most exciting independent acts around.

They also arrive to the press tent at the Brecon Beacons event in varying mental states. Guitarist L.E.D is fresh from a family holiday in Thailand, while frontwoman Clottie Cream confesses she's still recovering from the "trippy experience" of "enjoying the natural pickings" of the south Wales mountainside the night before.

The rest of the brilliantly-named band comprises of bassist Naima Jelly and drummer Rosy Bones. Their self-titled debut album, released in April - "a magical time" - saw them cram 19 short filthily-charming Country Sleaze (as they call it) tracks and sea shanties into 40 minutes, singing about topics as varied as strange lust (above), creepy blokes on the train and Rosy's pet monkey, Hank.

Their pre-album debut doube A-side single, Scum, took aim at Brexit in no uncertain terms.

"I honestly do think that someone spiked their drinks / How can an entire country be so... thick?"

How then do the band, who were taken to SXSW in Austin, Texas this year by BBC Music Introducing, feel about singing that particular one to festival crowds up and down this green and pleasant land?

"I feel like this is a festival that’s definitely full of very liberal socialist-minded people and I don’t feel worried to be saying that," says Clottie.

"I also feel like it's fine to say that to crowds that don’t necessarily believe in what you're saying. It's nice to have perspectives and to not be shunned for those."

"That's a very good thing to have and voice," she adds "but I don't know. I don't really ever care."

L.E.D offers: "We’re in a bit of a lefty bubble so maybe our music doesn’t expand that bubble as much as we’d like it to."

"Do you mean like in America?", asks Clottie, before launching into an excruciating anecdote about Stateside sexism at one of their gigs.

    Quote Message

We were playing to all those jocks and there was this dude, I thought he was having a fight with this girl, so I announced the next song and said 'this is about female sexual pleasure... I think we all need to learn a great deal about this' and just looked at him.

    Quote Message

'Can we all focus on this guy who doesn’t know how to treat women properly - that guy right there.' We both knew what we were talking about. He basically stood cross armed in the Tory power stance for the rest of the thing.

"The patriarchy is so ingrained," adds L.E.D, "even if you think you’re a liberal feminist man you have to constantly check yourself as you're never going know what it's like to be a woman.

"I'm talking about treating people with human decency and respect and knowing your privileges and not just assuming that women haven’t worked three times as hard to get to places where men can just walk."

"White people, as well, need to check themselves constantly. Us as women, because we’re white, need to remind ourselves that we have it better than other people."

The girls believe their music and provocative aesthetic affords them a means of "regaining control" or adjustment of how things could and should be in an ideal world.

"I think it's just important to have that sense of awareness because there are so many people that don’t even have people looking in their eyes," sighs Clottie.

"Like homeless people coming on the train and people pretending that they don’t exist and devaluing their basic human rights.

    Quote Message

It baffles me that people are so blind to issues. That someone can be on the streets freezing to death and no-one is batting an eyelid, no-one looks at them, everyone just pretends it's a problem that doesn’t exist. it's really sad.

Formed in 2016, GG emerged out of the same Brixton alternative rock scene as another former Newbie Tuesday act, Shame and the Fat White Family.

Clottie explains more: "It’s nice that people can grow from a similar space but I don’t think our music is connected in any way.

"I think we’re more connected as friends and help each other out.

"We’re very lucky to have certain venues [like The Windmill, external] that exist that have the space for that and don’t really have rules and regulations, like there's no noise complaints around the area, no-one trying to shut the pub down, no security on the door.

"That’s very welcoming to people of all ages, there's a diversity to it and that’s quite rare in London."

In keeping with the community spirit, the band's friend and artist Eddie Lawrence, external made them an (in)appropriate "massive goat" set design feature, that they call Claris.

"We were worried about her as she was papier-mâché so going to be wrecked in the van on tour," admits Clottie.

In case you were wondering, Goat Girl take their name from an adaptation of a particularly twisted comedy bit by the late Bill Hicks.

Now that one's taken, if anyone out there is looking for inspiration for a similarly dark moniker to use then how about Morbid Matter?

That was one of L.E.D's early suggestions... but we don't think they're going to be needing it.

A new music video for you now, after all the hard news.

The new mashup between the DJ with the marshmallow head and the UK indie band with the French name, sees actress Miranda Cosgrove portray a young woman who is gifted a golden retriever called Mello (by a Robbie Williams lookalike, don't you think?)

Life moves on and as Miranda grows older, so does Mello and ends up... well you know.

But before you get all weepy, that's not the end of this dog's tale. She then gifts her daughter a doggy of her own and so it goes...

“When Bastille sent me Happier for the first time I was taken aback,” Marshmello said in a statement.

"The amount of emotion that you could feel in the lyrics was crazy. As I listened to the song more and more it reminded me of so many things I’ve been through in my life. Toxic relationships, letting go of things I didn’t want to and just situations where happiness came with a price.

Recently I lost my dog which was really hard for me. I wanted the video to embrace the pain that we feel losing someone close to us and the cycle of life. This is what made me happier.

While nobody will ever truly know what it's really like to be a man with a marshmallow for a head, many can relate to losing a furry friend.

In the run up to BBC Music Day this Friday, 6 Music is on the road all week exploring the impact the UK’s art colleges have on British music and how they continue to shape their cities’ scene.

The station is broadcasting from Glasgow, London, Leeds and Sheffield,

This morning, 6 caught up with Glasgow hip hop artist Kobi Onyami - who has opened for Kanye Wes and Nas - about what the city is like for an independent musician and how it embraces creative thinking.

His album Gold was nominated for this year's Scottish Album of the Year, which was won by Young Fathers.

"I think Scotland itself embraces independence... politically and musically.

"I think they celebrate originality which is very important.

"It makes the artist unafraid to try knowing that you will be celebrated for being different - that's great."

BBC Music has also compiled a list of 11 albums recorded in Glasgow that you need to hear.

Cardi was the only female rapper with two chart-topping singles and now she's nosed even further ahead of the competition, after Maroon 5's Girls Like You eventually hit the number one spot in the US.

The song features Cardi as a guest and had been number two for the past six weeks.

The Queens rapper's debut Bodak Yellow topped the chart for three weeks in October last year while I Like It, with Bad Bunny and J Balvin took the top slot in July.

All of which means we can almost forgive her those ridiculous glasses.

He is set to tour the States until mid-October but that could now prove tricky.

The 35-year-old has already confirmed this will be his last ever tour, so some fans were understandably left disappointed by his premature finish.

It is Donald's birthday today though, so let's hope he's got his feet up.

Kent rock band Moose Blood have announced they're stepping away from music after a what they describe as a "traumatic" year.

They were due to support Good Charlotte on their 2019 tour but the band dropped them after pressure from fans. In 2017, Moose Blood's drummer Glenn Harvey left because of claims of "inappropriate behaviour".

Earlier this year, vocalist Eddy Brewerton denied accusations that he took nude photos from a woman's phone and forwarded them to the band.

In a statement, the band said: "We need to concentrate on all the good we have in our lives without constant concern of what may happen next."
