    BBC Radio 2

    Media caption,

Marc Almond tells Michael Ball about his routine whilst on a tough tour.

The former Soft Cell singer was in with Radio 2 DJ and fellow vocalist Michael Ball this weekend. The two got on to the topic of how one looks after ones voice in order to remain at the top of the music biz.

The odd singing lesson and eating pretty beige food are Marc's top tips for touring into your 60s.

"When I'm on tour I have to keep very regimented" he said.

"No choclate. no cheese, no milk, no dairy products, no spicy things.

"When I go on tour, I tend to eat very bland food, you know; a bit of salmon and brown rice."

Who says rock and roll is dead?

The singer will be eating blandly therefore in towns and cities across the nation throughout October and you can listen again to his full radio session.

    Liam Gallagher and Annie Nightingale

"One of the reasons that I, as a woman, was initially rejected as a potential Radio 1 DJ was that DJs were intended as 'husband substitutes'.

"BBC exact words. I kid you not."

Now the Grand Dame of Radio 1, broadcasting leg-end Annie Nightingale has been writing about the station as it celebrates its 50th birthday this year.

Legendary rocker Neil Young was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame in Toronto on Saturday night.

The 71-year-old singer from Ontario, who revealed the songs are "still coming", also joked that he "can't sing but it doesn't matter".

He said: "I don't know what to say because i'm still doing this. I was scared to come here in case it ended!

    "I don't know if I have charisma but I know I can't sing...but it doesn't matter..."

The ceremony included performances from k.d. lang, and Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and Bachman–Turner Overdrive, who presented Neil with his award.

The Heart of Gold singer improvised an analogy about rabbits before declaring himself to be a patriot.

"Songs are like animals. You really have to be careful with them - and sneak up on them, don't scare them."

He added: “I’m terribly proud to be Canadian.

    Quote Message

I know I’ve travelled a lot … but I’ve always been a Canadian citizen. I’ve never been a citizen of anywhere else, even though I love the USA. By the way, my message is: They’re already great.”

Noel Gallagher tells 6 Music's Matt Everitt about his new album 'Who Built the Moon?'.

We told you earlier about the details of Noel's forthcoming experimental album Who Built The Moon?

The man himself was on 6 Music this morning chatting about the product of a two-year collaboration with David Holmes and how the producer forced him to come up with "something different".

Speaking to Matt Everitt, he said: "It's easily the best record I've done out of the solo stuff so far, it's incredible. I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best records I've ever made."

He added: “We couldn't have made this record in Oasis - there would have been bedlam!"

Listen to a clip above or hear the whole interview on the 6 Music website.

Unsurprisingly, brother and former Oasis bandmate Liam is unconvinced by his brother's foray into the unknown.

  12. Gregory Porter sings Nat King Cole ahead of covers albumpublished at 12:03 BST 25 September 2017

    Kev Geoghegan
    Music News LIVE reporter

Soul singer Gregory Porter was one of the guests of Jools Holland at his big Later...with 25th birthday bash at the Royal Albert Hall recently.

The singer performed the classic song Mona Lisa, made famous by the great Nat King Cole.

The song is taken from Gregory's forthcoming album Me & Nat King Cole, which is out next month and sees the star perform some of Nat's greatest songs accompanied by a full orchestra and recorded at London's Air Studios.

"The idea came from when I was six or seven, it's really that long," he told Music News LIVE.

"I never wanted to cover some of these songs unless I was in the position to do so, with an orchestra and a grand sound.

"Nat King Cole's music came very early to me, in a way, through a throwaway comment from my mother, I wrote a little song and she said, 'Boy you sound like Nat King Cole,' so I went off and discovered his records."

"He was was one of her favourites artists, I listened to it and it calmed and soothed me."

Gregory, whose mother died when he was 22, grew up without his father and said he often listened to the singer and learned many of life's lessons.

"I remember listening to Pick Yourself Up at seven, I remember listening to it when I broke up with my girlfriend at college at age 21, and when my mother passed away when I was 22 and it still has validity to me now with its optimistic message.

"It's influenced my writing and my relationship with my audience.

"Maybe they'll find Nat's music through my music, I'm cool with that. I do hope they find my music as well though!"

Its mid-morning now so its about time for a little bit of music in the form of a Scandinavian supergroup.

    No, not that one.

This one is LIV, made up of Lykke Li (pictured above), Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt and Pontus Winnberg, and Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John.

Hurts to Liv is apparently a tribute to Lykke and Andrew's late parents.

“It’s been a very spiritual, beautiful, and life-awakening cycle.... Creating and giving birth to a baby boy, losing a mother — as well as Andrew’s father — and to be able to put into song life’s suffering before it even happened,” said Lykke.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds kicked off their long-awaited UK tour last night with a gig in Bournemouth.

The gig was the first on these shores since the singer's son Arthur tragically died falling from a cliff in Brighton in July 2015. The ordeal became the subject of latest album Skeleton Tree, as well as the documentary One More Time With Feeling.

Bad Seeds drummer Jim Sclavunos spoke to us last week about how the band set about replicating such acutely emotional tracks live.

"I can't speak for Nick obviously," he said. "Who knows what's going on his head?

"We all feel something, but surely he feels it most intensely.

"But it's a presentation of music for the public and it has to work on that level. And it's quite powerful. I don't think you have to know the back story to appreciate it."

He added: "As a performer you have to transcend to some extent whatever might have gone into making the music It's not just about emotions. It's about creating something that distills and is a more rarefied essence of the emotions."

The American drummer added that the recording of the album had been a "cathartic" experience for everyone involved and that the band were supporting Nick in the same way that any "family" would.

"There's an element of catharsis when you make music under any circumstances. You get something out there and it's manifested in a certain way and embodied by a certain set of ideas and sounds and implies a certain potential for performance.

"All of our individual personalities play into that to some extent and I guess support whatever idea is there. And if the idea is deeply rooted in emotion then we're supporting it.

    Quote Message

It's sort of like a family, you support each other at times of duress. Sometimes support is as simple as making a cup of tea or coffee."

Sections of the Bournemouth crowd were invited to join Nick, Jim and the band on stage - Iggy Pop style - last night, for a raucous rendition of Stagger Lee.

The people of Manchester can perhaps look forward to the same treatment tonight as the band play the newly-reopened Arena.

    Nick turned 60 on Friday.

  15. Wild Beasts announce band 'coming to an end'published at 11:08 BST 25 September 2017

    Wild Beasts

Wild Beasts have, this morning, announced that they are to split.

The Kendal art rock band became indie favourites after the release of their debut LP Limbo, Panto in 2008 and the follow-up Two Dancers, was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2010.

In a statement, which thanked fans for their "love and energy", the band said: "Our hearts and minds have been devoted to the band since we were teenagers. We've create something quite of our own and built a body of work which we stand by as heartfelt and true.

"The four of us have decided, for our own reasons and in our own ways, that it is now time to leave this orbit."

Read the full statement below, which appears to hint at the possibility of a farewell gig or two.

Motown legend Stevie Wonder has showed his support for under-fire American Football players by 'taking a knee' at a gig on Saturday night.

Last week President Donald Trump declared that players who kneel down during the traditional pre-match playing of the US national anthem to protest police brutality should be sacked by their clubs.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was the first player to do so, now the Superstition singer has gone one better by getting down on both knees, with the help of son Kwame, at the Global Citizen festival in Central Park, New York.

Stevie told the crowd: "Tonight, I'm taking a knee for America.

"But not just one knee, I'm taking both knees. Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, our leaders of the world and our globe."

The President's incendiary comments from over the weekend contained some potentially offensive language so please be warned before reading on.

To a crowd of cheering supporters on Friday, Mr Trump asked: "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now... he is fired'?"

Stevie clearly disagrees and now a host of other black American musicians have voiced their anger towards the President.

Pharrell Williams, who performed with the soul singer on Saturday night also took a knee himself at a Charlottsville Concert, external, the following night.

Pharrell, who last week called on US citizens to stand up to far-right protesters, said: "If I want to get on my knees right now for the people of my city, for the people of my state, that's what this flag is for."

Elsewhere fellow hip hop star Jay-Z called the president "a joke", adding: "With all... I can't even say with all due respect....with all disrespect I just think he's just not a very sophisticated man."

Another rapper Ice Cube has joined them in making his feelings clear with another strongly-worded Tweet, paraphrasing the President, below.

  20. Noel Gallagher announces UK tour and new album detailspublished at 09:19 BST 25 September 2017

    Noel GallagherImage source, Getty Images

Let's kick off today with the news Noel Gallagher has announced the details of his forthcoming new album Who Built The Moon?

You'll have to wait until 24 November to find out the answer to that rather ambitious question. The new record has been produced by DJ and composer David Holmes in Belfast and, for the first time in his rock 'n' roll career, the former Oasis guitarist wrote all the songs in the studio.

So, expect something a little different, including instrumentals, imagined soundtracks and even a French spoken word part (c'est magnifique).

Noel, who recently re-opened the Manchester Arena at the We Are Manchester benefit gig, explained the recording process: "We took a keyboard riff we liked from an unused track and added chords. A year later we came to deal with it as a song and when we got to the chorus.

    Quote Message

David kept asking me to write a new one….again and again and again. I was ready to strangle him. The one that you hear is the eighth attempt and, you know what? The annoying thing is he was right."

About track seven, Black & White Sunshine, Noel added: “David played me the sample, so I worked out the chords and we demoed just a few, short minutes of it, taking it away on tour and playing with it.

"When it became a song back in Belfast it was so joyous, I just had to do it justice. What’s more joyous than being in love, baby? So, I wrote a song about love and it’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done.”

    Amen to that.

Producer David Holmes said: People are going to be surprised. I think people love Noel and they’re desperate for him to make a really big, bold, up-tempo beast of a record – a lot of Noel’s music is quite mid-tempo. This one is fun."

What's more, Gallagher Snr and his High Flying Birds are to set off on a UK & Ireland tour in April/May next year and tickets for that go on sale on Friday.

Check out the rather other-worldly album trailer below.
