Morris Hayes of Prince's former house band, The New Power Generation, has returned to the UK - "a Prince stronghold" - to celebrate the musician he worked with for twenty years.

The NPG will pay a musical tribute to the performer, who died just over two years ago of a fentanyl painkiller overdose, at London's Indigo venue, inside the O2 Arena tomorrow night

Morris spoke to 6 Music about his memories of the perfectionism behind 72-hour-long rehearsals and roller-coaster shows, including a memorable Super Bowl where Prince asked for "more rain".

    Media caption,

The New Power Generation's Morris Hayes talks about Prince's legacy.

He also revealed there's an incredible amount of Prince material left in the vaults, so much in fact, that the tapes are spilling over onto the floor and into the memorabilia "pre-vault."

Morris told DJ Lauren Laverne Prince's family want people to hear it and there's enough music to put out over the next 30 years, including solo recordings and tracks with Lenny Kravitz, Gwen Stefani, Questlove, D'Angelo and Patti LaBelle.

Amsterdam indie newbies Pip Blom just finished touring Europe with indie icons The Breeders ("it was so cool - they're super nice") and pulled in a strong crowd at Latitude festival despite going up directly against surprise performer Liam Gallagher ("It happens!").

In between gigging alongside their musical heroes, the hardworking Dutch four-piece - who have been getting plenty of 6 Music airplay with latest single, Pussycat (below) - have been busy plotting a series of upcoming releases.

Not that they'd call it 'work', exactly.

Frontwoman Pip told MNL: "We're just doing what we like to do so it doesn't really feel like hard work.

"But of course there is a whole team working for us doing a lot - if you ask them they'll probably say yes!

The 22-year-old (above) adds: "We are making plans for the album, it's going to happen pretty soon the recording process hopefully and we'll release it sometime in spring next year.

"There's going to be an EP in September first and we worked with Dave McCracken (Ian Brown / Depeche Mode producer) on that too."

So which songs go on the EP and which tracks are held back for the LP?

Guitarist and Pip's brother Tender explains: "Just everybody has got make a selection basically and we decide together."

    Quote Message

It's really difficult because we've just made demos and they can change a lot during the recording process so maybe you love one demo right now but if you record it, it may sound awful!

    Pip Blom

"Or maybe it's not working as a thing in the entirety of the album."

Stay tuned folks to see what makes the cut.

The band are also planning a UK tour for November.

"I wanted there to be intimacy. I wanted to find a place between beauty and ugliness."

The punk band staged a pitch invasion during the World Cup final in Moscow and were initially released after a 15-day sentence on Tuesday.

But the group were immediately detained after being released and held for a further day before being finally let go, according to Nikolai Vasilyev.

They could face further charges of disobeying the police and of holding a public event without prior permission, which carries a maximum jail terms of 10 and 15 days.

Nicki Minaj has publicly asked Fast Car singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman for permission to sample one of her songs, on her new album

Nicki's new album, Queen, is due out on 10 August but, according to Pitchfork, contains an uncleared Tracy Chapman sample, as well as a feature from one of “the greatest rappers of all time.”

US rapper Nicki is so keen to include a segment of the unnamed track she's apparently willing to delay the release of her record until she gets permission.

“Tracy Chapman, can you please hit me,” she tweeted.

That post has since been deleted but she's shared a poll with her fans, asking if she should crack on without the sample or put the record back by a week in order to get it cleared.

More than 67,000 people have voted already.

As fans of both artists we're on the fence with this one.
