  1. We're off...published at 17:51 BST 19 May 2017

    King Nun

To enjoy some more music... but you can switch over to Steve Lamacq on 6 Music to hear The Districts in session.

We're hoping they let us in. Failing that it's some King Nun (above).

We'll be back with a round up of Our Great Escap-ades on Monday.

    Have a good one.

  2. I record vocals in my car - S Kidpublished at 17:48 BST 19 May 2017

    Asa SöderqvistImage source, Asa Söderqvist

There's a top recording tip for you, courtesy of one of Sweden's top new grunge pop bands who we have to call S Kid (due to a bad word).

Frontwoman Asa Soderqvist (above) told us they played in "like in a school" last night (that would be the Brighthelm Centre) and will perform again tonight at Brighton's Komedia venue.

She went for a massage and a smoothie today to relax in between shows. Rock 'n' roll.

She said: "I'm super ready for tonight. Anything could happen."

Their new album Fish, which she recorded in her room on her laptop, is out on 2 June.

She's already planning the next one and has been recording vocals in her car.

"There's a top tip. record your vocals in your car as it creates a very tall sound."

The band's track Oh Please Be A Cocky Cool Kid soundtracked the pre-Great Escape advert video (scroll down) and Asa thinks they made a great choice.

"That crazy but I think they are right. We are the best band."

That's definitely the answer a cocky Cool Kid would give.

"I am one too", she added. "We are the same animal species."

  3. 5 Things We've Learned This Week (at The Great Escape Festival)published at 17:35 BST 19 May 2017

    1) The festival attracts an international crowd

Bands, fans and delegates from across the world have come to Brighton for The Great Escape this weekend.

Scroll down for our chats with top acts from as far afield as Nigeria, Sweden, Spain and erm, Richmond, London.

The British music scene is alive and well and the whole world want in on the action.

    Ibibio Sound Machine

    2) Ibibio bring the sun to a rain-soaked city

Everyone in Brighton's new favourite UK-Nigeria fusion band, whose Afrobeat rhythms pulled people out of a sodden state to throw some funky shapes around the Paganini Ballroom.

Apparently it's all about "fun, it's energetic, it's uplifting, there's lot of call and response and it's about a positive vibe."

    3) Japan doesn't like UK Music

The numbers are pretty healthy for UK music sales overseas.

In fact, the UK accounted for 24% of all music bought or heard in Europe in 2016.

Big in The Netherlands, less popular in France and virtually non-existent in Japan.

Britain only accounts for 1.7% of that market - although at around £35 a CD that's still quite lucrative Del Boy.

    This time next year Rodders...

    Marika Hackman

    4) We don't let the rain spoil a good time

Downpours last night and today by the seaside in Brighton but it's been a carnival atmosphere at every show and seminar we've attended.

As well as the scheduled acts we've walked through an alternative Great Escape on the fringes and seen impromptu performances (and in some cases crazy dance moves) in the street in the rain.

Plus the cagoul is still a cool look.

Look how happy Marika Hackman is up there..

    5) Chris Cornell will be missed

The singer, who died on Thursday, still has an influence on the music being played here.

We've stumbled upon several young angry loud guitar bands (boys and girls) already with more than a hint of the Seattle grunge sound that Chris was so influential in establishing.

  4. King Nun were 'widely hated' at the startpublished at 17:00 BST 19 May 2017

    King NunImage source, King Nun

Richmond four-piece King Nun are headlining the BBC Introducing stage at the Paganini Ballroom at the Great Escape later.

The band have yet to release a debut album but you can check out their track Tulip below which propelled them headfirst into the glare of the music industry spotlight.

But it hasn't been plain-sailing, as singer Theo remembers.

"The worst thing when we were getting started, we used to play open mic nights and we were widely hated because we were the noisiest band and we weren't doing covers so no-one knew the songs, no-one could sing along.

    "They were the worst.

"When we started playing actual gigs, they were heaven."

The band were also pretty awed by the venue where they will be playing tonight.

"It's got chandeliers, its like playing in a proper wedding venue.

    "Just without the wedding."

The music world is still coming to terms with yesterday's news that Chris Cornell has been found dead in Detroit at the age of 52.

Here's Chris doing what he did best with his seminal Seattle grunge band on Later... with Jools Holland five years ago.

  6. Liam Payne is nervously excited about new singlepublished at 16:35 BST 19 May 2017

    Media caption,

Grimmy welcomes Liam to the show as he drops his debut single Strip That Down.

Like the feeling you get delivering a best man's speech. You've written your best material now you just hope it goes down well with the crowd.

Liam's debut solo track Strip That Down is out today (scroll down).

He told Radio 1 brekkie host Grimmy that vibes in his camp are strong on release day and also revealed what his other half 'Chez' made of the track.

  7. Music in open spaces @ The Great Escapepublished at 16:14 BST 19 May 2017

    Nathan Ball

Shakespeare said the whole world is a stage.

But they're throwing them up all over the place at TGE - for street performers like Nathan Ball.

    People watch Nathan Ball
  8. The sun has (finally) got his hat on in Brightonpublished at 15:53 BST 19 May 2017

    Hallelujah!

Sunshine at last by the seaside. I guess if you want the festival rainbow you have to put up with the rain.

We've just been to speak to a couple more hotly-tipped acts, namely King Nun and a band that we shall have to refer to as S Kid (you can check the lineup if you really want to know their actual name).

Fun fact: A track by the second band was chosen as the soundtrack to the official pre-festival video below...so they must be good.

  9. Listen to Sigrid showcase set for Mistajampublished at 15:48 BST 19 May 2017

So there's a lot of female Scandanavian talent in town this weekend.

Slotface, S Kid and Sigrid to name but three.

We brought you a snippet of one of her showcases earlier now here she is playing a set for Mistajam on Radio 1.

Listen above to two track shows Dynamite and Don't Kill My Vibe.

It seems the rain isn't killing the vibe here as despite the downpours there's still people performing and dancing in the street.

    Sunshine state of mind.

  10. Chris Cornell's wife releases statementpublished at 15:16 BST 19 May 2017

    Rolling Stone magazine

Chris Cornell's wife has released a statement following his death at the age of 52 on Thursday.

Vicky Cornell called his death "a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled."

The Soundgarden singer was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Detroit following a gig in the city on Wednesday evening.

Officials later confirmed he had hanged himself.

Vicky Cornell called him "a devoted father and husband."

Following Soundgarden's concert, Vicky said she's noticed a change in her husband's demeanor, explaining: "When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words - he was different.

"I contacted security and asked that they check on him," she continued.

"I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life."

It's the first new music we've heard from the London hip hop soul man for a long time.

We last heard from him in 2012 with his Mercury Award nominated album Ill Manors but now he's back.

The new single is called The Name of Man and you can hear a snippet above.

  12. British acts are big in the Netherlands, not in Japanpublished at 14:50 BST 19 May 2017

    Mark Savage
    Music reporter

Over at The Great Escape's conference centre, delegates are discussing how to market British music to the rest of the world.

Setting the scene, Chris Green from the BPI looked at how Adele, David Bowie and the rest fared last year. As you might expect, they're quite popular.

In fact, the UK accounted for 24% of all music bought or heard in Europe in 2016. The Netherlands were particularly keen - while France is less keen (partly because of the cultural exception, which means 40% of music broadcast over there has to be French).

There are challenges ahead, though. British artists aren't as popular on streaming services as they are on CD and vinyl, especially in the US.

And in Japan, Britain only accounts for 1.7% of the market - although that's still quite lucrative, Chris observed, as CDs cost around £35 over there.

The biggest opportunities are in emerging markets, including China. The conference will spend today discussing how to get a foothold for British bands over there, and beyond.

  13. The xx perform on the Late Showpublished at 14:42 BST 19 May 2017

Here's a band who performed at The Great Escape in 2009.

Now The xx are doing their own thing, having held residency at the Brixton Ademy in London and playing at a mythical looking waterfall in Iceland later this summer.

And here there are playing in the Late Late show in the US for host Stephen Colbert.

  15. Sigrid storms at seaside showcasepublished at 13:48 BST 19 May 2017

    Sigrid

Norwegian singer Sigrid is one of the year's most talked-about new singers, thanks largely to her single Don't Kill My Vibe, a song about a recording session gone wrong.

"They were just being mean," she says of the (unnamed) producers who inspired the track. "It's not that difficult to be polite, you know?"

The star-in-waiting has just played a handful of small, sold out shows in the UK and is in Brighton for two sets at The Great Escape before jetting off to America.

The first, held in a tiny room above a coffee shop, was totally rammed - to the extent that the wooden floor started to bow under the weight of eager fans.

"Sorry," she said, peering over the heads of the audience. "I should have been taller."

Still, she achieved a rare thing at these industry showcases: Total silence from the crowd.

To get a taste of what you missed, here's an amateur clip of the 20-year-old performing Don't Kill My Vibe.

The Kent duo topped the bill last night with a seaside pier party with a horror theme.

Ahead of the gig frontman Isaac Holman told Newsbeat: "It feels surreal.

"I was out watching a friend's band the other night, and I saw a billboard for Great Escape and it feels crazy to see our name right at the top.

"I don't think that will ever stop feeling weird."

Last night at The Great Escape Spanish garage rockers The Parrots rocked Brighton venue Bleach to it's core.

We caught up with the Madrid four-piece after the show and they taught us three key phrases that might come in handy if you ever find yourself in the Spanish capital.

So, courtesy of Diego, Alex and the two Danis...

    1. Donde es la fiesta? = Where is the party?
    2. Quiero una caña por favor = I want a small cold beer please

As Alex from the band points out, "cana is like smaller than a half pint but really cold. When we come to the UK the beer is warm, we like it really cold!"

    3. No me gustas, te quiero! = I don't like you, I love you!

Which just happens to be the name of one of their tracks below.

Okay now learn those three phrases as there may be a Spanglish test at the end of the day.

As well as the respect of the industry it seems the grime star also has the ear of a certain rock 'n' roll star.

Liam Gallagher tweeted: "Man like Skepta keeping it real got to stand for something as you were."

Now the NME are reporting that the rapper has acknowledged the praise of the former Oasis frontman.

He said: "Liam’s in touch, bro. You can see. Not everybody really knows what’s happening. It’s a presence, it’s apparent, I’m here. You can see it in there eyes, you can see it in Bowie’s eyes when he takes a photo, rest in peace. There are so many of them.”

  19. The Great Escape is waking up again...published at 12:09 BST 19 May 2017

    Media caption,

Find out what The Great Escape is from the people who make it so special

...slowly, but surely. It is almost lunchtime after all.

So no doubt a few hangovers have been shaken off here in Brighton today (not us of course, we are trues pro's).

The action is about is about to get going again with bands from all over the planet it seems descending on this Southern coastal city for the weekend.

So far we've bumped into bands from Nigeria, LA, Norway and Spain, as well as some fine young British talent.

We even met one promotor who had come on her own all the way from Moscow and seemed to enjoy BBC Sound of winner Ray BLK's set last night.

We couldn't agree more, we caught her set at the Old Market and it was was brilliant.

So why do they come to TGE from far and wide and what's it all about?

Listen above to the people who make it happen.

  20. Liam brings the Paynepublished at 11:52 BST 19 May 2017

Liam Payne has become the fifth and final member of One Direction to release a solo song, after chucking Strip That Down onto the world's streaming services this morning.

After Niall's singer-songwriter efforts and Harry's transformation into a soft rock god, this takes the more tried and tested boy band route of diving headfirst into R&B sex jams.

Co-written by Ed Sheeran and featuring Migos star Quavo, it wears its influences (Drake, The Weeknd) proudly on its sleeves.
