  5. 'Fifth Beatle' to act in Lennon playpublished at 15:14 GMT 4 December 2017

The Beatles with Pete Best (far right)Image source, Getty Images

Pete Best, the drummer who was in The Beatles until being unceremoniously replaced by Ringo Starr just as their careers were taking off, is to make his acting debut - in a play about John Lennon.

Best will play himself in three performances of a new comedy called Lennon's Banjo, external, about the quest to track down the instrument on which Lennon learned to play his first song.

It's based on the novel Julia's Banjo by Rob Fennah and Helen A Jones and will be staged at the appropriately-named Epstein Theatre in Liverpool in April and May.

    Best said:

    Quote Message

I read Julia's Banjo some years ago and thought it was a great mix of fact and fiction with regards to the Beatles and the elusive banjo. It made me smile; a really enjoyable read. So, when speaking to Rob Fennah about the book becoming a stage play, I said in passing, 'I should play me!'

And so it has come to pass - he'll appear in two performances on 25 April and one on 5 May.

Acting is already in the family - his niece is Leanne Best, who plays Tina in Cold Feet.
