BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Studio Concerts Grieg & Vaughan Williams

Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds opens today’s programme with Grieg’s gentle Lyric Suite. An orchestration of four of his most popular Lyric Pieces, Grieg’s Suite is ripe with delicate textures -and this utterly delightful musical miniature certainly reinforces his gift for sound-painting.

The grit and astringency of Vaughan Williams’s Sixth Symphony follows. Noteworthy for its unusually discordant harmonic language, no-one expected the sheer, explosive force of his astonishing Sixth and, 70 years on, this firestorm of a symphony still leaves listeners reeling. John Storgårds unleashes its power this afternoon.
