  1. Pedal Power - Best Bits!published at 15:50 GMT 15 March 2024

    Day 1 - Stuart & Annabella

Our hearts burst when Mollie was joined at the starting line by her daughter Annabella and fiancé Stuart Broad. Annabella held a hand painted sign saying 'Go Mummy!'.

Matt Edmondson later shared that when Mollie struggled to get back on the bike thoughts of Annabella helped her carry on:

"A lot of kids think their parents are superheroes. Mollie actually is! In years to come Annabella will look back and say 'my mum did WHAT!?'"

    Day 2 - Matt Rap

On Tuesday morning Radio 1 listeners managed to raise over £90,000 before 9am and unlocked Matt Edmondson's epic reworking of 'The Climb' by Miley Cyrus featuring guest vocals from a host of Radio 1 DJs.

'The Ride' even has a rap verse from Matt himself.

Check out the lyric video and Mollie's emotional reaction below.

Day 3 - High hills, high emotions and a summoned hug

The hills were high, emotions were too and Mollie survived by leaning on her Radio 1 crew for support. At one point Matt Edmondson was summoned from his vehicle for a hug and cry sesh.

We're sure you'll agree that witnessing their friendship in action has been a real highlight of this challenge.

    Quote Message

We talk to each other about everything, there are no secrets. If you’ve got a friend like that in your life you are very lucky but if you haven’t then having a charity like [Comic Relief] is just essential."

Day 4: Greg James' scooter humiliation

Matt Edmondson made a deal with listeners on day 4.

If the total passed £400,000 Greg James would be forced to ride a tiny scooter through Manchester following Mollie for the first leg on Mollie's journey to Leeds.

Of course the Radio 1 listeners made it happen and we all got to witness Greg's public humiliation.

His wife even posted her disapproval on social media.

    Worth it? We think so.

Day 5 - SHE did it

Matt Edmondson commented that throughout her Pedal Power challenge Mollie has said 'WE did it' at every milestone.

"Mollie is very conscious of and grateful for the incredible support of the listeners, everyone who has donated, sent messages of support as well as all the Radio 1 and Comic Relief crew around who she couldn't do it without..."

But let's be honest, SHE did it.

She battled her demons, confronted her grief head-on and pushed through the pain, raising over 1 Million pounds for Comic Relief. Well done, Mollie!

I am completely overwhelmed by everyone being so generous. I can't believe we have raised £1 million!

This week has been time for me to think about what's happened, to think about my dad and to process the fact that everyone's donated so much. I wish I could thank everybody individually.

It has been such a team effort. I cannot thank everybody enough.

  14. Matt Edmondson just opened up on air in a way we haven't heard beforepublished at 14:26 GMT 15 March 2024

And it sums up exactly why Mollie is doing this challenge.

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 DJ

I lost my dad when I was 22. It was a very sudden death. He had problems with alcohol and problems with his mental health. He left us in an incredibly sudden way that, if I’m honest, left me feeling angry. I sort of pretended like it hadn’t happened. But grief has a funny way of not caring about time. All you’re doing is delaying a confrontation with it. For me, it took years and years. I would have 1 or 2 days a year where I would become almost immobilised by thinking about it. My amazing wife Bryony would comfort me about it. One of the first people I opened up to about it was Mollie. She had a family member who had passed in a similar way.

And I’m really sad that I had to repay the favour, in a way. Moll had so much love and respect for her dad Steve, who she lost suddenly last year. She came into the show one day and told me, ‘He wasn’t himself, something was up.’ They found out a couple of days later he had a brain tumour. They knew pretty quickly it was incurable. Mollie was pregnant at the time, about to give birth. And she was still doing the show by the way, functioning at the level she does.

Her dad died. She could not carry on into grief, because she had a baby and she had to look after Annabella. Stuart [Broad] because of his job was travelling. She had to be alone for a long time. She couldn’t talk about it. I would try and check in on her and she just couldn’t face it. I want to thank Comic Relief really for this opportunity coming to Mollie. Her grieving has started now, it’s started way earlier than mine did. She is tackling it head on.

I just want to remind people that pain is part of grief. It will never go away completely. But you won’t feel as ruined by it as you do at the time. Mollie said to me that she’s going to drown out the noise on the way to the finish line today, and her dad is gonna be with her. Steve is going to be with her on the last couple of miles, and Moll is going to take the time to think about him on those last couple of miles. It’s both of them that’ll be crossing the finish line.

Anyone who’s experienced grief at any point - it can be for a pet, grandma, a friend - do what Mollie is doing now and just think about them for a bit. Give a moment where you say, ‘Thank you for being in my life,’ and you remember all the good bits. Just take a minute for yourself.

If you have been affected by any of what you’ve heard on air or read online, you can go to BBC Action Line.

Is Mollie minutes away from arriving in Hull? We're none the wiser than anyone reading this page, to be honest. But we do know she's very close to achieving her goal.

Matt Edmondson's driven off to Queen Victoria Square in Hull and he's broadcasting live on Radio 1 now. "It's the final push here," he said. "I'm hoping she can get here, it'll be absolutely terrible if she doesn't," he jokes.

Everywhere she's going, on every pit stop, Mollie is stopping to say hello, give hugs and pose for photos.

Katie Thistleton says: "Matt, I don’t think you’ll be short of radio work after this week. But if it does dry up, you’ll be great as a motivational speaker."

  18. "She's cycled beyond the length of the Grand Canyon"published at 13:26 GMT 15 March 2024

    Matt Edmondson
    Radio 1 DJ

A lot of people have travelled from London to Hull in a train or on a car, but you've never done it on a bike, right? If Mollie had cycled upwards, she would have hit the northern lights. She's cycled beyond the length of the Grand Canyon. It's ridiculous. So what I'm saying is, my best friend really needs to help. She needs to arrive in this lovely Hull sunshine and she needs whatever you can give to get her over that line.
