There were rumours a couple of years ago that The Smiths would be appearing at T, but sadly for fans the rumours were unfounded.
Having formed The Smiths with Morrissey in the summer of 1982, he co-wrote their four classic albums - The Smiths (1984), Meat is Murder (1985), The Queen is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987). The Queen is Dead has long been a perennial of classic album polls and was voted the Greatest Album of the Millennium by Melody Maker, but Johnny’s personal favourite is Strangeways, Here We Come.
Since The Smiths split in 1987 (were they really only together for 5 years?), Johnny has played with various bands including The The, Modest Mouse and The Cribs. In May 2010, he was awarded the Inspiration Award at the 55th Ivor Novello Awards. In his acceptance speech, he told the audience ‘I always thought the greatest thing you can achieve as a musician is to be called an inspiration – aside from a big house in Sunningdale, obviously.'
Johnny’s first solo album, The Messenger, was released in February this year and charted at number 10 and the single, ‘New Town Velocity’ will be out this summer.
