Video Nation History
Find out how it all started.

FACTS

In 1993 Chris Mohr and Mandy Rose of the Community Programmes Unit started Video Nation, using a series of cameras distributed across the UK.

More than 10,000 tapes were shot and sent into the BBC, from which approximately 1300 shorts were edited and shown on television.

Video Nation came off-air in June 2000, and Chris Mohr started working with the BFI (British Film Institute) to archive the 1,300 shorts and 10,000 rushes.

have your say.
Video Nation is for everyone- of any age or background. It's your opportunity to tell your story in your own words.

It's an opportunity to share your views and experiences with others, to talk directly to both local and national audiences and to add your videos to the growing online archive of everyday life.

Filming experience

Never used a camcorder before? Don't worry you don't have to be technically minded, or even have your own camera.

Someone from the Essex team will provide all the equipment, training and advice you need to film successfully.

When you're finished we edit the film into a short video (approx two mins). Then we hand the controls to you. If you are unhappy about a finished video, then it just doesn't get shown. That way you are free to shoot first, decide later.

I don't do anything interesting...

You don't have to be an expert, Video Nation is about the ordinary lives of people who live in Essex. What's important to you? What do you feel passionate about? What makes your blood boil? What makes you cry?

From turning 18 to taking retirement, share your experiences here with others on Video Nation Essex.
