Your Top Tips of 2004

'Ladies, don't spend hundreds on your tresses when you can have your hair cut and coloured for a fraction of the cost at student classes. The juniors are very closely supervised, and I often find they are more careful with my colour than regular staff, as they need to impress their supervisors to obtain their qualifications. I cut my monthly hairdressing bill from £80 to £20 just by doing this. 'Karen from Bristol
'Ask your bank for an online service, since getting online banking I haven't been charged for going overdrawn once as I check my bank account everyday and if I see money going out that I don't have I either transfer money from my savings account or ask the bank for an authorised overdraft. Before online banking I would be none the wiser when I went overdrawn and the bank would charge me for this. 'Gareth from Islington
'Take a packed lunch to work instead of buying sandwiches every day. A 70p loaf is far cheaper a week than a £3 sandwich a day! That's £2.80 per month being spent instead of the £15 per week, or £60 per month. 'Andy from Sussex
'As well as having your normal current account, open a 'number two account'. Make sure this new account has no overdraft or credit facility and when you go out transfer only the money you can afford to spend into your number two account. When you then go out, leave your normal current account cards, cheque book etc. at home and it will be impossible to spend more than you can afford. It works! 'Joseph from Great Yarmouth
'Shop around for shorter minimum term contracts on items, allowing you to escape more quickly, if you find something cheaper/better soon after. I saved with broadband internet by not being locked into a 12 month deal, saving 15 pounds a month or a whopping £180 a year, enough for a cheap holiday. 'Rob from Lichfield
'I sold my car and now cycle to work. I got £500 for the car and save heaps on petrol and taxes now too. 'Alice from Brighton
