Big spender
Travelling the world for free as a flight attendant was just too much temptation for 28-year-old Simon whose big spending ways left him severely in the red. His basic wage of £10,000 just couldn't keep up.

Simon has been known to spend over £1,000 during a stop over in Las Vegas and whilst he splurged on clothes, champagne and gambling there was no thought of where the money would come from. His extravagant and fashionable lifestyle caught up with him and after maxing out the credit cards and getting more and more loans Simon found himself in debt to the tune of £44,500. Enter Simon's mum Ruth and her partner Mike.

Action stations
As soon as Ruth and Mike moved in with Simon his credit cards were confiscated and it was down to business. Bank of Mum & Dad's Lawrence Gold stepped in to work out exactly where the money was going and discovered that although Simon's take home income was around £1,000 per month, he was spending over £1,750 per month.

A quick solution was suggested as Lawrence discussed the 'Rent a Room' scheme, which would allow Simon to take in a lodger, tax free up to £4,250 per year. Ruth and Mike got Simon cleaning up the room in question and although Simon wasn't happy about it, the plan to find a lodger is put into action.

The pressure's on
With pressure coming from all sides Simon's wardrobe got a closer look as Ruth tried to get her son to part with some of his designer threads. It was a suggestion that didn't go down well and in the end Simon won that round.

Lawrence Gold stepped in to give Simon a few home truths, a new budget was set, with a clothes allowance of £0, and advice given to get a second job. Ruth tried to inspire Simon by getting him to meet a travel writer, with the idea that he could make use of those stopovers by writing articles.

Update
After the visit from Ruth and Mike the unbelievable happened – Simon actually sold some of his clothes and, more importantly, hasn't replaced them. The plan to get a lodger into the spare room has been put into action, he has been given a much needed pay rise and Simon has stuck to Lawrence 's budget to the penny. To top things off, Simon has also had his first travel article published in a national magazine.
