In one way or another Jules Bellerby is one of BBC Radio York's longest serving members of staff. He was working here even before the station went on-air, when a holiday job included a stint as a yardman at Bootham Engineers, who were the previous occupants of the Radio York building. Jules then worked for the station playing in tapes and music for our test transmissions before we actually went on air in 1983 Since October 2001 Jules has been co-presenting with his wife Julia Booth. Their programme - Jules and Julia - is on air Monday to Friday between 12noon and 2pm. The show has brought a new sound to the airwaves, their conversational style and snappy interviewing has brought a fresh sound to lunchtimes across North Yorkshire. Never slow at coming forward, there isn't much Jules won't turn his hand to. In 2001 for, BBC Radio York's Children in Need Variety Night, Jules dressed up as a toothbrush to perform a duet with Julia. Having failed to make the grade (even in the punk era) with any of the bands he drummed in, Jules says he "drifted" into radio initially working in the commercial sector in Manchester, Stoke and Middlesbrough via a stint in Italy. "The Italian thing was quite an experience", says Jules. "We used to broadcast from the top of a mountain in the pricipality of Seborga - beaming across to the French riviera. "The view from the studio window was something else, the mountains on the right, the twinkling lights of Monte Carlo below and the Mediterranean on the left." Jules joined the BBC fulltime in 1990 (or as his Mum says, got a proper job) and presented the morning show on BBC Essex, where he first met Julia. Together they moved back to North Yorkshire with their young family and soon both ended up working for the BBC in North Yorkshire. Jules worked in sport where he became the station's sports editor, while Julia presented the mid morning show. Then in October 2001 the Jules & Julia show was born in after the management at BBC Radio York made the brave decision to team them up on-air. |
