Dedication was the name of the game on Saturday 22 July as dancers across the land got moving in an attempt to break various dance records in one day. Hosted by Bruce Forsyth and Zoe Ball, the dancers successfully broke all six records under the watchful eyes of a team of adjudicators from the Guinness Book of Records.
1,000 dancers gathered in Trafalgar Square for BBC ONE's Dancing in the Street. It was a toe-tapping night of entertainment, with six new world records achieved. The records broken were:
BBC Local Radio around the UK joined in The Big Dance Class and 8,962 dancers have now entered the record books Russell Sergeant from the Jiving Lindy Hoppers did 33 swing flips in a minute, beating the previous record of 17; Break-dancer Punisher achieved a brand new record for the number of consecutive 1990s he did ten of them, spinning round in the air balancing in one hand; B-Boy Steady beat his own record of 40 windmills in 30 seconds, achieving a new total of 42; Children from London's Irish Step Dance clubs along with dancers from the show successfully danced the longest ever River Dance line increasing it from 50 to 116; Finally, the most spectacular record. 800 dancers performed the Big Dance a new world record where 45 styles of dance were performed to the same piece of music. It included belly dancers, salsa, swing, flamenco, African, tango, bhangra, and even synchronised swimmers in the fountains. The sensational evening also included performances from The Rocky Horror Picture Show with audience member Chris Gavriel joining them to perform The Time Warp. And the amateur dance winners of BBC New Talent's Ballroom Blitz competition joined Anton du Beke and his Strictly Come Dancing colleagues for a very professional performance of American Smooth. The BBC broadcast came at the end of a week of events across the UK called Big Dance, a partnership between the Mayor of London and Arts Council England.
