"The State Within has restored my faith in television, especially in the UK. It's an amazing blend of 24 and The West Wing* with an injection of Britishness.
I was so concerned the final episode would not live up to the rest of the series. So much had been built up, it needed a satisfying conclusion. But I had nothing to worry about. The final episode was fantastic, tying the story together comprehensively and leaving us with the only ending it could - uncertainty. Jason Isaacs is an excellent lead (and wears a suit like no other man - my goodness!) Every other aspect of the show works well to produce top quality, complex, intelligent, challenging television, which is such a rarity."

"Very well plotted, though I felt I missed something important if I blinked!
All the actors, including those in small, but key, roles, such as the FBI agent George Blake, were superb, restrained, and well suited to their parts.
It was great to see Sharon Gless again - she was superb, a really powerful performance."
Deb Klemperer, Newcastle-under-Lyme
"If you ignore the initial shaky camera work you have to acknowledge the quality of the script-writing and acting from all the cast. The weekly trailers added to the intrigue and suspense.
This final episode was a satisfactory conclusion without descending into the all too familiar slushy ending with Mark rushing to Jane's bedside. The twists and turns kept me in suspense right to the end. An excellent production – can we please expect more? "

"What an excellent series. Thoroughly engaging, right up to the last episode...but it ended rather oddly. Cliffhanger? Hmm, not the kind of abrupt and inconclusive ending I was expecting, and so I'm wondering whether we are going to be treated to a second series?
I really hope so. The first episode of the second series should begin right at the point the last episode finished. I have to confess that I found Sharon Gless' character the weakest out of all of them though. She didn't really carry the role off."

"I felt dirty and ashamed at having followed this for six weeks. It's the first show in a long time where I had to have subtitles on to stand a chance of following the plot. The acting was great, but the delivery really didn't help. When the 'bad guy' was revealed it was a bit of a 'so what' moment as he'd been so much in the background I barely remembered who he was. There were also many unanswered questions mostly involving the double agent in the embassy which were totally baffling - even with the subtitles on."
LC, London
"One thing I seem to have missed (or forgotten about in all the twisitng and turning) what was the point of the CMC coup attempt? If the whole point was to provoke a war with Usman why try and take him out this way? It can't have been a 'fake' attempt as it was Brocklehurst who blew the gaff on it.
Have I discovered a big plot hole or am I just being thick? Answers please. A great series none the less."
John, Bristol
"Episode 6 still leaves some questions unanswered, like why Lynne saved Mark's job in the previous episode. Why did Macintyre decide to kill Styles himself instead of getting a henchman, the hospital syringe guy for example, to do his dirty work?
And what good George Blake's made-up story about how Macintyre died would do Brocklehurst, who's still placed at the scene of the crime in the cover story? Its only purpose may be to let her show off her shooting skills.
And if Gordon Adair told Macintyre to get rid of Styles, why not also Sir Mark, Jane and Caroline? They can hardly be 'watertight' with those people still alive.
Like the Irangate scandal, there's evidence that the conspiracy involves high levels of government but the blame is publically pinned on some underlings, who in this case conveniently die so they can't talk."

"When the third mobile telephone rang and the camera slowly panned up the suited sleeve to reveal the person in charge, my heart was in my mouth...
Sir Mark kept his head, his nerve, his job and his girl. Nicholas showed that he had a vulnerable human side, but the hero of the hour was surely Agent George Blake just for the way she staged the scene in Christopher’s apartment!
A big thank you to Lizzie Mickery and Daniel Percival for this riveting and articulate thriller, but more importantly for treating the viewer as an intelligent being. I do hope the BBC commission more writing from them. The DVD is being released mid-January and I can’t wait to watch the whole series again."
Jules, Hampshire
"This drama is one of the very few that has captured me from the first episode to the very last scene. This final episode did tie up all the loose ends - I would never have suspected Gordon Adair as the 'baddy'. I also liked the way Jane and Mark ended up with a firm foundation for a realtionship. Very well written and acted."
Jane, Blackburn
"I think this is a fantastic show. Sadly I believe the ratings were poor, so I have little doubt the BBC are going to take the rash decision of axing this show. I hope this is not the case though, what we have here is a great story."
Bluf Purdi, Glasgow
"An absolutely great thriller. Great acting throughout from Ben Daniels, Eva Birthistle and Jason Isaacs. It's a shame that Jason was overlooked as James Bond, he is that good.
I just hope the BBC make a sequel and continue to make programmes of such a high standard and less of the reality TV that ruins UK television. Well done BBC and well done The State Within team."
