This discussion will be migrating to a new improved message board system on Monday 31 October. You will need to register before you can use the new system for the first time. If you've previosuly used other BBC services and have already created a single sign on account, you shouldn't need to register again. The new message board is a big improvement on what has gone before and offers much improved security. Simple instructions will guide you through the process and it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to get going. The BBC Devon web team will be offering a helpline from Monday 31 October for anyone experiencing difficulties logging in. The old message board (this one) will be left online as a read only archive for several weeks so you can refer back to or copy any of your posts that you wish to save.

anything that brings employment opportunities has got to be a good thing.

Everyone is so negative, i agree with James from Mutley. Why should we moan about a £200 million undercover shopping complex. If Plymouth wants to move forward with new ideas than the next step is a mall. Plymouth is a beautiful city with the coast simply a few steps away. The city is beautiful. If a amll is outdated what do you suggest!!!!!!
James - Mutley
Me too E. Clearly we should all evacuate Plymouth as soon as possible and move, well, frankly anywhere, because everywhere else is SO much better than Plymouth. Try living in London and wasting half your day commuting and then come and complain.

Isn't the Drake Circus project a bit over the top for shops like Primark. Surely they would do better down the pannier market end of town.

And we're having a baby ferris wheel for Christmas but apparently the damp squib icerink will not be back.

I go to Bristol every month or so through work. Very different and the obvious regional capital. That does not mean that Plymouth should not try to peek over the parapet.

i once visited Plymouth, its not as bad people said it was. But the food was bad, real bad and over priced. It all comes down to the locals, who were very friendly

we have had a screen!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't suggesting that a wheel should be a permanant attraction on the hoe, as they can be easily dismantled... the one in manchester is here until easter then its position will be reviewed... also.. how have giant wheels had there day when only 3 cities in the uk have them... coinciedently the 3 largest cities...come on plymouth, u havent even got a bbc big screen yet, even hull has one of those

I think some people on here just make it up.I can't find any academic or other public comment on the net. We know that a lot of janners have strange and strong views either way on Drake Circus but I can't find anyone in the outside world remotely interested......Except in the Herald which in uniquivocally pro. Maybe because its after the ad revenue from what will be struggling new shops fighting to bring in the shoppers before they go under.

I've not come across Drake Circus in what is called below the design/teaching community. Tell us more!
Nick MacT - UCL
Sue, please put a note on the department webpage or blog. Lets get to the bottom of this rumour about an alleged academic debate about Drake Circus.I can't find an undergaraduate student called Sue Susan Suzanne etc. Are you perhaps not studying architecture or related subjects but a friend or relative of someone who is? Please get in touch. Some kind of reasoned public or private discussion about DC and Plymouth development generally would be interesting.

When the cicic centre council office building first opened it had a viewing platform and restaurant at roof level. In less than a year the early busy stream of visitors keen to look across the city moors into Cornwall and out to sea had reduced to a trickle. The restaurant/cafe closed and soon after the council barred the public. There's no money in it.

Tourist viewing platform Ferris wheels have just about had their day. Rather like temporary Christmas ice rinks.Plymouth always thinks of these things too late. A big wheel on the Hoe would be popular for three months and then make a huge defecit. The Maylower centre on the Barbican was less than a nineday wonder. The Dome has had it and despite very creditable efforts and vast investment of time cash and imagination the Marine Aquarium begins to falter.
