| | Hilary Mabon takes you on a personal tour of her home town - Seaton in East Devon.
Seaton is a holiday resort with something for everyone on Devon's spectacular Jurassic Coast. |
 | | | Seaton is a popular East Devon holiday resort enjoying an enviable position in the Axe Valley.
The town is protected by the rolling dark green hills on one side, and by the Haven and White Cliffs to the East and West. It has a superb mile long beach consisting of shingle and sand.
Situated at the mouth of the Axe estuary, Seaton was a substantial port for several centuries.
Shipbuilding was an important trade until the 1800's and the estuary was also the site of a thriving salt industry for many centuries.

Whether you want to sit and sunbathe or go diving, swimming, walking, play tennis, sailing, cricket, bowls or golf - Seaton welcomes you.
The Seaton Tramway runs from March to September and visitors can enjoy a tram ride alongside the Axe Estuary.
Here a huge variety of birds can be seen such as shelduck, teal, oystercatcher, lapwing, redshank, curlew, heron and kingfisher.
Birdwatchers can take advantage of a new wheelchair friendly bird hide that has recently been built on the Seaton Marshes.

The East Devon coastline, known as the Jurassic Coast, has been placed right alongside the most amazing natural wonders of the world, such as the Grand Canyon.
Rocks and prehistoric fossils dating back 200 million years can be found along this stretch of coast. It was granted World Heritage Status in December 2001.
A number of shops in the town are privately owned which the more discerning visitor will appreciate alongside the shops selling the usual buckets and spades.
The Town Hall is in use most days with a variety of organisations holding events throughout the year. For example the Seaton Film Club regularly shows the latest films suitable for both adults and children.

As you would expect, the town is well served for sports and youth clubs where new members are always welcome.
There is something for everyone in Seaton. Whether you come for a day or to live, you will be assured of a warm welcome, new friends and plenty of activities.
