Domestic violence: not as hidden as it was
A helpline for men who suffer domestic violence has been set up in Plymouth - and it's getting calls from men right across the country.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PLAYS
'For Better, For Worse' is a specially recorded radio play for Domestic Violence Awareness Week.

It was written by the Wolf and Water Arts company and produced by BBC Radio Devon.

The play was written in close contact with the women from North Devon's womens' refuge, drawing on their experiences.

Women aren't the only victims of domestic violence - men can also suffer abuse from their partners.

Just like domestic violence against women, the exact extent of the problem isn't known and can only be guessed at.

But perhaps an indication is the number of calls to a helpline which was set up in Plymouth in 2003.

M.A.L.E (Men's Advice Line Enquiries) has taken calls from men all over Britain. Co-ordinator Mark Coulter says the calls are averaging almost one a day.

Picking up the phone and telling a stranger you're being abused is a big step for the men to take.

"How many men will openly admit to being abused?" said Mark. "There is often a reluctance to do so.

"And then there is a lack of awareness of men as victims of domestic violence, which means there is a shortage of services for men."

He added: "We cover the whole of Devon. We come out and see people at GP surgeries, and we have Outreach volunteers.

"But we have had calls from people all over the country.

"The abuse takes all forms. One man rang in to say his partner had slashed his hand down to the bone.

"So the abuse can be violence, but it can also be psychological and emotional - that is often a more effective way of grinding you down.

"Domestic violence is the worst and ultimate form of bullying."

The men who get in touch with MALE often telephone using their mobile phones in cars or at work, where they feel safe.

The advice given to men suffering abuse is: keep a record of all incidents; report violence to the police; get medical help for injuries; take legal advice; never retaliate; and tell families and friends what's happening.

MALE initially received funding for a year, taking it up to April 2004, but additional funding has secured its future for another 12 months.

If you would like help from MALE, visit the website linked from the left of this page. Or ring the helpline on
0845 064 6800 - calls are charged at the local rate and the number will appear on your phone bill.
