 | | Latest | Latest | Latest | | | Money Mountain 2003 has closed with a final on-air total of | | £28,905 |
This year, Money Mountain raised funds for the Derby Night Shelter, which provides emergency overnight accommodation for the homeless, and Scropton Riding For The Disabled - which is used by hundreds of disabled people every week.
Celebrating twenty years since it started, the day (Sunday 12th October) started with the traditional Dial a Hymn.
Listeners pledged donations for dedications to loved ones and to hear hymns sung by the Queen’s Hall Methodist Mission choir in Derby.
It raised five and a half thousand pounds alone.
The main focus of the appeal followed, which was an on-air auction with listeners bidding for lots donated by local businesses, individuals and organisations.
At the end of the auction, twenty eight thousand nine hundred and five pounds was raised.
Among the star lots sold was a piece of Lynton porcelain made and donated by the Derby company sold for £800.
Fundraising events and activities have taken place in the run up to the auction weekend.
Among them a Gardener’s Question Time raised over £600, a sponsored motorbike ride organised by the Derbyshire Suzuki Owners club produced £850 and Gordon Harrison from Chaddesden raised nearly £300 by shaking a tin at residents near his home!
Gary Andrews, the station’s Assistant Editor said: "Yet again the station’s listeners have come up trumps to make a difference to local people’s lives. The generosity of local businesses in donating items for auction, along with the time and effort from dozens of volunteers, never ceases to amaze us. Without all of them Money Mountain wouldn’t be the success that it clearly is."
The station’s annual charity appeal has raised approaching one million pounds since it first began in 1983.
The Derby Night Shelter, which will receive two-thirds of the money raised, helps rough-sleepers by providing a bed for the night, supper, hot drinks, TV, books and games.
The project also offers support such as health advice, drug/alcohol services, housing, basic skills and a befriending service.

The shelter offers 12 beds to homeless people and is full nearly every night.
The Glad Tidings Hall, where the shelter operates, is in serious need of refurbishment and renovation to make it secure, safe and hygienic. The Derby Night Shelter is aiming to raise funds to make improvements to the building, install showers, fire doors, and security.
 | | Disabled people will also benefit from Money Mountain 2003 | Scropton Riding for the Disabled is a purpose-built riding and carriage-driving centre for people with disabilities and the majority of its clients are from Derby, and Burton on Trent.
Around 200 disabled people visit the centre each week and they have a range of impairments ranging from cerebal palsy, spina bifida, deafness and blindness to learning difficulties and many more.
The centre is now looking to buy a motorised horsebox to give riders to opportunity to take part in competitions in other parts of the country.
In the past, riders have had to rely on relatives and volunteers to transport them around and it's hoped the horsebox will give more riders more freedom to enjoy the benefits such competitions can bring them.
Scropton Riding for the disabled will receive a third of the money raised, up to a maximum of £15,000. | |
