All about Inside Lives ...

All the stories you can read and hear on this site have been produced by local people as part of an exciting new radio storytelling project, run jointly by the Learning Skills Council and the BBC. We are looking for more people to take part in the project, so if you fancy “hearing your name in lights”, read on to find out all about it.

The Inside Lives group from Ambleside
The Inside Lives group from Ambleside

Our first group of local storytellers took part in a series of full and half day workshops run by Cumbria County Council Adult Education Service Skills for Life tutors in Cartmel, Frizington and Distington. There they learnt how to write a 2 minute script of a story about their life. All the stories were then recorded with the help of a BBC Producer.

The stories range from the moving to the comical, but one thing they all have in common is that they are true-life stories told by local people in their own words and their own voices.

The project builds on the success of other BBC projects, Telling Lives and BBC Radio Stoke’s Inside Lives, both of which encouraged members of the public not only to share their stories with the world, but also to learn the skills to enable them to produce their stories themselves.

Radio Storytelling Producer Marie Crook says, ‘It’s been a privilege to work with the groups and to hear all the fascinating stories. Everyone has a story to tell and it’s great to be able to bring them to a wider audience – they all deserve to be heard.’
