Your Community - West Cumbria - Copeland Overview

Want to know something about the community you live in or what makes it so great? This is the gateway to your community page where you can read what other members of your community have written.

The Copeland area of West Cumbria is rich in cultural heritage. The Romans built defences down the coastline as far as Ravenglass, and remains can still be seen. The area has played host to coal mining, slate mining and shipbuilding. Whitehaven was one of the first planned towns in England and was an important port, receiving shiploads of Tobacco from America and rum and sugar from the West Indies. Copeland is also home to Scafell Pike - the hightest mountain in England, and Wastwater - the deepest lake in the UK.

This community information page is still in progress - communities will be added as the BBC bus makes its way around the county. If you would like to add an entry, come and visit us on the bus, or e-mail some facts about your community to [email protected].

On a Cold Wind to Frizington

Frizington used to be simply described as one long street.

Well, that long street is still there, but the houses that line it have people who are certainly warm and welcoming. And with great stories to tell.

Mr. Messenger was one of them who has lived here since 1959.

Here he tells us about the change that Frizington has seen over the years. A change that he fears is slowly taking the countryside into a deep freeze.

Listen to the audio.
