Your Community - Carlisle and Brampton Overview

Want to know something about the community you live in or what makes it so great? This is the gateway to your community page where you can read what other members of your community have written. See if your community has been listed below yet.

Carlisle and its surrounding area has had a troubled past over the ages, being involved in a tussle between Scottish and English ownership. The area also lays claim to including a part of Hadrians Wall which ran right through the heart of Carlisle itself. The untamed area of the Pennines, where Hadrian's Wall continues on its journey east, offers spectacular views where you can imagine yourself to be a Roman soldier battling against the unforgiving weather. Mary Queen of Scots spent some of her imprisonment in Carlisle Castle. Legend has it that even King Arthur spent some time at the castle. Although Carlisle is the central part of the area, being the county town of Cumbria, it also encompasses the more outlying market towns of Brampton, Longtown and rural villages stretching as far east and north as the Northumbrian and Scottish borders.

This community information page is still in progress - communities will be added as the BBC bus makes its way around the county. If you would like to add an entry, come and visit us on the bus, or e-mail some facts about your community to cumbriabus@bbc.co.uk.
