There was a time when Coventry was the epicentre of music and youth culture. Musicians came to studios in the city to recreate the Coventry sound. It was called 2-Tone. Between 1979 and 1981, the cult record label set up by mercurial music genius Jerry Dammers, scored several hits from bands including The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat and Madness and spawned a generation of Tonic suit-wearing skankers. The memories still linger even though a quarter of a century has passed since Ghost Town hit number one and BBC Coventry and Warwickshire is celebrating with a week of events from 30 January called Too Much Too Young. We've assembled a packed programme of events running on air, in our Open Centre and at venues around the city organised with the help of local music expert Pete Chambers. Events will include a 2-Tone panel quiz to be broadcast during the Bob Brolly show, featuring presenters from the radio station, stars of 2-Tone and fans going head-to-head with questions about the era. We'll be broadcasting your 2-Tone memories alongside those of the stars of the era and we need to hear from you now if you want to help, click on the link below to find out how you can take part. The BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Open Centre will be home to a fantastic display of images taken by photographer Toni Tye in 1980 when she followed the bands - and the fans - around while the film Dance Craze was being produced. We have a sneak preview of the exhibition, which will be accompanied by memorabilia from the era, here on the website. Click on the link below to take a look. Vic Minett will be revealing your top five 2-Tone tunes in a special show to be broadcast on 5 February, which will also feature music that influenced the era and more besides. Click on the link below to vote for your favourite tracks. The Open Centre will also be hosting a special gig on 2 February featuring live music from Roddy Byers and the Skabilly Rebels, Neville Staple and tribute band UB4T. We'll also be broadcasting new takes on 2-Tone classics by the bands of today, interviews and lots, lots more. For a full programme of events, click the What's On link on the right. |
