Mawda have come to our attention twice already this year. Firstly they joined in with the recording of Rob Halligan’s asian tsunami disaster charity record Stand Together and secondly they performed at the massive fund-raising concert at Coventry’s Colosseum which was held back in February. So we thought it was time to get to know the band a little better and try and work out if they’re pop or lo-fi punk. But if the band don’t even know the answer to that, what chance did we have? Either way we love ‘em, violin et al. Introducing the band Big Dan is the driving force behind the four-piece outfit. Influenced by The Pixies and The Libertines, Dan (not to be confused with Little Dan) is the guitar hero and provides most of the lead vocals. | | Mawda |
Little Dan (not to be confused with his bigger namesake) loves indie and with his violin is to the band what John Cale is to The Velvet Underground. Well kind of anyhow. Matt Triangle gives Mawda that little bit of punk edge thanks to his bass playing. It was a shock when we found out he loves to play big band and jazz. But as he weighs in with some of the song-writing duties and vocals we’ve decided to forgive him And then there’s Matt the drummer. Matt is a massive Chillies fan but don’t be fooled by his aggressive powerful work on the skins – he’s actually quite down-to-earth and helps keep the boys grounded in reality by their own admission.
