Big Boss Interview: BAT’s Asli Ertonguc, BBC Sounds

Complaint

This episode featured an interview with Asli Ertonguc, the UK and Ireland Managing Director of BAT. A listener raised several concerns about the content, focused on an alleged lack of attention given to the scientific evidence of the consequences to human health of cigarettes and nicotine. The ECU considered whether the interview met the standards of due impartiality set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

The series Big Boss Interview provides listeners with an insight into the issues involved in running high profile companies. The format is a lengthy interview with a single individual. It follows there is no requirement to include other contributors offering a different point of view so long as the interviewee is subjected to appropriate scrutiny.

In this case, Ms Ertonguc spoke about the challenges faced by BAT as it responds to a significant change in its business model, including a shift in consumer demand and changes to regulation and legislation. In the context of a business podcast, there was a clear public interest in examining how a global brand such as BAT is adapting to market changes, including declining cigarette sales and a growth in vaping and nicotine pouches. The interview focused on these business challenges and, in the ECU’s judgement, that was a legitimate approach for a podcast of this kind to take.

The interview also drew attention to the health risks associated with the products BAT sells and Ms Ertonguc was challenged about how vapes and nicotine pouches are promoted, noting concerns the industry has targeted young people.
