Cardiff's goalkeeper failed to stop Kanu's strike

Portsmouth’s Nigerian striker 前锋 Kanu took advantage 利用 of a mistake by the Cardiff goalkeeper to score the winning goal a few minutes before the end of the first half.

Cardiff could have equalised 追平 shortly after that but had a goal ruled out 被判无效 for handball 手球.

Although the game was largely a low-key affair 低调赛事, the win for Portsmouth marked a personal triumph for their charismatic 个人魅力十足的 manager Harry Redknapp, who won his first major trophy in a 25-year coaching career.

Redknapp described the result as a "dream come true" 梦想成真 however he went on to say that it was not his greatest achievement 最大的成就 with the club.

"It's a great day in terms of there is glory in winning but, in football terms, keeping Portsmouth up was a bigger achievement," he said, meaning that saving Portsmouth from relegation 降级 two season ago was a more important feat 功绩.

Portsmouth’s veteran goalkeeper 经验丰富的守门员 David James was more effusive 过分激动的 in his praise, describing Redknapp as a "legend", meaning that Redknapp would be forever famous in the history of the club.

James told reporters the game had been a hard one and a "bit scrappy" 乱的 but one that Portsmouth "deserved to win".

Cardiff’s goalkeeper Peter Enkelman was disappointed to have conceded the goal 输（给对方）一分 that cost them the game.

"It could have bounced 弹回来 anywhere," said Enkelman, "the defence could maybe have cleared it, but it bounced just in front of Kanu and he tucked it in," meaning that the mistake led to an easy goal for Portsmouth.

Dave Jones, Cardiff’s manager, was more philosophical 冷静的 in his reaction, and not inclined to blame his goalkeeper.

"It was a mistake that cost us but we gave it everything we had 使了全力 and that's all I asked for," Jones told the BBC.

'Pompey' 庞培 （朴次茅斯队的别名） are now looking forward to next season with their sights set on a place in European competition.

Kanu, who has been awarded a one-year contract extension, said, "I love the supporters and I want to be part of the team that plays in the Uefa Cup 欧洲联盟杯."
