Sir Alex Ferguson has won ten league titles with Manchester United

The title race could not have been tighter with Chelsea and Manchester going into their final games on equal points, although Manchester had a substantially better goal difference 净胜球积分领先.

Chelsea needed Manchester to lose or draw if they were to pip them at the post 赛终前的最后一刻获胜 but the ‘Red Devils’ 红魔（曼联队代称） were in no mood to let their 17th title slip away 放过机会.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for United with a coolly taken penalty in the 33rd minute then substitute Ryan Giggs sealed the victory 锁定胜利 with a second half goal that effectively ended Chelsea’s dream of stealing the Premier League title.

It was a very special game for Giggs, as it marked his 758th game for Manchester, equalling the record 记录 set by United legend Sir Bobby Charlton in the 1970s.

Giggs was typically modest 一贯谦虚地 about his achievement, saying he was "not bothered 无所谓 about personal records".

"Now we aim to add another trophy in Moscow," he added, referring to United’s next date with destiny – the Champion’s League final against Chelsea in Moscow at the end of May.

If United win there, it will mean manager Sir Alex Ferguson will have a second European title to go with the ten league titles he has won with United.

It seems incredible now that Sir Alex was considering retirement 退休 at the end of the 2002 season. He was persuaded not to do so then by his wife, and it appears that she remains a persuasive force in Ferguson’s career plans.

"That wife of mine just bullies 霸道；欺负 me. She kicks me out the door at 7am," said Sir Alex.

"I will not risk her wrath," he added, meaning he is afraid of making her angry.

Although it has been a stunning 辉煌的 season for United as a team, special praise must be reserved for their Portugese winger 边锋 Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has had a record-breaking season 破纪录赛季, scoring 41 goals and winning the FA’s Player of the Year award for the second year running.

Ronaldo summed up 概括 his team’s performance after the Wigan match with pride and confidence:
