Family Doctors 家庭医生

A doctor seeing a patient
What seems to be the problem?

How do British people see the doctor? I hear that many foreigners have their own family doctors, and I wonder whether it's general for every family in Britain.

Gao Yuanxue

When people get sick in China they normally go to the hospital to see a doctor or a specialist. But in the UK people do things differently.

British people usually see their family doctor unless it is an emergency. Family doctors are called GPs, which stands for general practitioner. GPs are qualified to diagnose and treat all sorts of different illnesses, and UK residents normally have to register at their local GP's surgery.

Listen to Yang Li and William Kremer discuss GPs and their work in today's programme.
