Why do British people put so much emphasis on drinks rather than food on social occasions?   Liu Jia, Shanghai

Do you remember the last party you were invited to? Was there as much food as drinks?

Well, for most Chinese students who are studying in the UK, the lack of food on social occasions is almost unbearable as they are used to a culture where food is an indispensable part of entertaining friends socially.

However, Britain is very much a drinking culture where people are quite used to the idea of having just a drink in their hand while socializing.
