Katie attempts to make a Hacker pencil pot
CBBC's Katie Thistleton and Hacker the Dog take on the 'Here's One I Made Earlier Challenge', attempting to recreate a classic Blue Peter make by Valerie Singleton. Will they make a dog's dinner of this canine pencil pot? Yes. Yes, of course they will.
How to make your own dog pencil case
Here's how you can make a pencil case in the shape of Iggy the Dog!
You will need
Small plastic water bottle
Sandpaper
Scissors
PVA glue
2 egg boxes
Yellow paint
Sticky tack
Black and yellow felt
1 pompom for the nose (black or pink)
1 pencil for the tail (looks best if it's a yellow pencil with a rubber on the end!)
1 pink rubber (shaped so one end is curved like a tongue)
10 small buttons
Cereal box
Sticky-back plastic
Paper
Step 1
Remove the label from the bottle and sand it with sandpaper to create a rough edge for painting. Draw a line around the bottle about 8cm from the neck. Then cut along the line – grab a grown-up to help if you need!
TOP TIP: The bottle will be much easier to cut if you squash it first.
Step 2
Cut out a mouth shape in the small piece of bottle, and a hole for the tail in the larger piece. Do this by first marking out the shape you want with a pen, then holding a piece of sticky tack underneath it on the inside of the bottle and punching a pencil through. Now cut out the shape with scissors. If in doubt, ask a grown-up to help.
Step 3
Mix PVA glue and paint together (in equal parts) and paint both sections of the bottle, leaving it to dry completely. You might need to do a few coats!
Step 4
Now take your egg boxes. Cut off the little spikes that separate the eggs. These are going to be your dog's legs! Cut 1cm down each corner, fold these tabs in, and glue them together. When they're dry, paint them yellow. Then stick them to the body, making sure they're on the bottom with the hole for the tail facing up!
Step 5
For the collar, cut out a 3cm-wide strip from a cereal box. Wrap it around the bottle and make a mark where the ends meet, then add 3cm to this and cut to size creating a triangle shape on one end. Cover one side in sticky-back plastic or paint it your desired colour. Put glue down one half of the collar (lengthways) and stick this half to the end of the head section, so that the part without glue is sticking out.
Step 6
Cut two small circles of black felt for the eyes and two ear shapes from yellow felt, and glue them to the face. Stick the pompom in the opening of the water bottle, for the nose. Now push the rubber through the mouth hole and put the pencil in the hole at the back of the body. You're all done!
