How to make Chinese steamed sponge cakes
Join Blue Peter's past presenter Lindsey and Chef Jeremy Pang as they teach us how to make his yummy Chinese style steamed sponge cakes.
- 340g self-raising flour
- 340g brown sugar
- 3 medium eggs
- 200ml vegetable oil
- 28g baking powder
- 200ml evaporated milk
- 2 teaspoons custard powder
- ¼ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
🚨Remember to grab a grown-up when boiling water and whilst using hot stove tops!
What is a Chinese steamed sponge cake?
A Chinese steamed sponge cake is a light and fluffy dessert which has a very airy honeycomb texture and achieved through steaming rather than baking. It can be steamed by using a pan and a lid like in the video but usually it would be placed in a bamboo steamer.
