Who was Oliver Cromwell and why was he important?

Following the defeat of King Charles I in the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell became 'Lord Protector' ... totally not the King though (although he had similar powers!).

Under his rule he created a lot of new laws banning citizens from engaging in fun activities so they could spend more time praying and studying the Bible; he pretty much said, 'school every day and homework every night', boo! Maybe he would have changed his mind if video games had been invented back then. 🤔

In 1658 he died (boo) and was replaced by his son Richard Cromwell (hooray)! The army, however, was concerned about his lack of military experience, so Richard resigned (boo) and Charles II was invited to be King again (hooray).

It was a weird time in British history, but then again, when WASN’T? It's hopelessly horrible!
