Blue Peter Walking with Dinosaurs Competition Rules

The Blue Peter Walking with Dinosaurs competition is now closed for entries.

The winner will be announced on Blue Peter November 2025 on CBBC and BBC iPlayer.

Blue Peter Walking with Dinosaurs Competition rules

To enter Blue Peter's Walking with Dinosaurs Competition please read the rules below. This competition is open for entries at 5pm on Friday 23rd May and closes at 5pm Monday 30th June 2025.

Viewers aged between 6 and 12 will be asked to use their dino knowledge and creativity to draw and tell Blue Peter about a new dinosaur they imagine they have discovered and why they would love the opportunity to be a dino hunter on Blue Peter!

The winner will travel with Blue Peter to visit a prehistoric dig site. They will receive a VIP tour, meet the team and experience a day in the life of a palaeontologist. They will also receive a framed winner’s certificate and an orange, Blue Peter badge.

Rules for Blue Peter’s Walking with Dinosaurs Competition

1. Blue Peter's Walking with Dinosaurs Competition (the "Competition") is open to all UK residents (including residents of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man and children of UK armed services overseas) aged between 6 and 12 years of age on Monday 30th June 2025 (the closing date of the competition), except the children or close relatives of BBC Group employees, or any persons closely connected with Blue Peter, or Walking with Dinosaurs.

The BBC reserves the right to request proof of age for entrants as well as parent's or guardian's permission to enter.

2. To enter the Competition entrants must:

  • Give your dinosaur a name.

  • Draw a picture to show what your dinosaur looks like.

  • Use your imagination to describe a new dinosaur that you have discovered! (200 words max)

Tell us what is special or unique about your dinosaur, what’s it called, what does it eat, where does it live, does it have any skills, any fun facts? Use your knowledge to describe the dinosaur that you imagine has been newly discovered that could have once lived in the pre-historic world.

  • Why would you like to be a dino hunter on Blue Peter? (200 words max)

Do you enjoy sharing your love of dinosaurs with other people? Would you be excited to learn about field research and expeditions? What would the experience mean for you?

At Blue Peter we welcome entries from children of all abilities and needs. Our aim is to be inclusive – please inform us of anything which may require reasonable adjustments to enable you to enter and to fulfil the prize.

3. Entry is via post, using the form and correct postage stamp (BLUE PETER, MEDIACITYUK, SALFORD, M50 2DH), entries sent with the incorrect postage cannot be accepted. Or you can enter online with My Blue Peter which can be accessed from the Blue Peter website. You will need a BBC account to enter, which means you have a username and password you can use to sign in to the CBBC website. To get a BBC account, a parent or guardian clicks on any ‘Register’ linkand follows the instructions. 

4. The ideas must be all the entrant’s own work with no pre-existing characters, brand names or material from third parties. Only entries using the MyBluePeter, or the entry form from the Blue Peter website can be accepted. You may use the Blue Peter logo or ship, or mention Walking with Dinosaurs in your entry if you’d like to, but this will not be a deciding factor in the judging process.

5. Only one entry per person may be submitted. No joint entries will be allowed. If more than one entry is received from an entrant, we will accept the first entry received and disregard the others.

6. The entrant and parent/guardian will need to submit all the information requested in the online form and as set out in the Privacy Notice including a telephone number and/or email which must allow us to contact the parent/guardian. Entrants will need their parent/guardian’s permission to enter the Competition and ensure that they have read the Rules.

7. Entries must be RECEIVED by no later than 5pm on Monday 30th June 2025. Late entries will be disqualified. The BBC cannot take any responsibility for any technical failure or malfunction, which may result in an entry being delayed, or not properly registered or recorded.

8. By submitting an entry for the Competition, the entrant’s parent/guardian are deemed to have given permission for the entry to be created and published free of charge by the BBC, BBC Studios, or production partners in all media and platforms, including television, print and internet, for all purposes as it wishes.

Blue Peter, the BBC and our partners may wish to display entries containing an entrant’s forename, age and town or county, in all the above instances working in line with the BBC Child Protection Policy, to prevent jigsaw identification of any entrant.

The BBC's conditions on contributions apply to the Competition Rules and entry is subject to the BBC’s Terms of Use.

9. For editorial reasons, it is necessary for the BBC to acquire ownership of all rights in the winning entry. It is a condition of entry that the winner’s parent/guardian will sign any additional documentation to assign all rights to the BBC and to waive all moral rights the winner may have in the winning entry. If you have any concerns about this requirement, we advise you not to enter.

10. All entries will be judged in the first instance by members of the Blue Peter and Walking with Dinosaurs production teams. This first stage judging decides which entries should be put forward to the verification stage.

Criteria

11. All entries will be judged against the following criteria:

  • Share your ideas about your imaginary dinosaur with us.

  • Make your drawing unique, creative, original and eye-catching, if you want you can add annotations to point out key features of your dinosaur.

  • Tell us what is special or unique about your dinosaur, what’s it called, what does it eat, where does it live, does it have any skills, any fun facts? Use your knowledge to describe the dinosaur that you imagine has been newly discovered that could have once lived in the pre-historic world.

  • Tell us why you would like the opportunity to be a dino hunter with our Blue Peter presenters and what this could mean for you? Share your enthusiasm for dinosaurs, let us know if you have an interest in science, geography, geology, or history. Tell us if you would be excited to learn about field research and expeditions. 

  • Make sure your submission is age appropriate to Blue Peter.

  • Make sure your submission is original, and use your own words

  • Send your entry via post or MyBluePeter before the closing date and time.

DON’T

  • Tell us about or copy a picture of a real dinosaur. You can be inspired by dinosaurs that you have seen or read about.

  • Don’t imagine a dinosaur that lives today in the modern world – think millions of years ago.

  • Don’t write more than the maximum word count, if you write more, only the first 200 words will be considered.

  • Use brand names or other third-party ideas.

  • Don’t send your entry via email, only apply by post or through My Blue Peter.

12. The first judging round will select the 5 best entries for each of the following age categories:

Category 1: Entrants aged 6-9

Category 2: Entrants aged 10-12

For each age category 1 back-up entry will be ranked in order of merit to act as standbys. (12 in total)

Standbys will not go through to the next stage, unless they replace any entries in the verification process need to be excluded from the competition.

13. Telephone calls will be made to the short-listed and stand-by parent/guardians between 14th July – 18th July 2025 by a member of the Blue Peter team to check eligibility and to talk to the entrant about their idea and interest in dinosaurs. If an entrant is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made to do so, the BBC reserves the right to offer their place to the next best entrant.

The team will contact via phone, or email to arrange a video call, (we will ask you if you need any accessibility adjustments) the video call will be recorded, and the Blue Peter team will speak to the parent or guardian and then speak to the child entrant.

The conversation will be informal and friendly, it will be recorded so that a short clip can be shared with the judges at the second stage of the judging process.

The conversation will help us to judge:

  • Creativity and originality of ideas

  • Confidence in communicating your knowledge and enthusiasm for dinosaurs.

An interest in the topic and in adventures and expeditions.

14. Ten eligible entries in total will go through from the first stage judging to the second stage of judging where a winner and runner up will be selected.

15. The second judging stage will look at the 10 best entries and be carried out by a judging panel of representatives from Blue Peter (including Ellen Evans, Editor of Blue Peter as Head Judge) There will also be representatives from Walking with Dinosaurs. From the 10 entries, the panel will choose the top two entries in each age category (four in total). From the top two the winner will be selected, and runner ups will be ranked in order of merit.

The winning child and one parent will travel with Blue Peter to a dinosaur dig site. This will involve a commitment of 5 days to travel and film in September 2025. The dig site is accessible on foot, if your child has access requirements the prize can be adjusted to accommodate. We understand that the prize requires a significant input from child and parent, please do consider whether this is a prize which your child will be able to enjoy. Blue Peter will need permission to contact school and GP to confirm fitness to participate.

Blue Peter will apply for a licence to travel overseas which requires production obtaining permission from a Magistrate. Both the winning child and their parent/guardian must have a valid passport (or be willing to obtain one should this be needed) to fulfil the prize experience trip to Alberta, Canada. The winning child and their parent/guardian will have to meet entry to Canada guidelines https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/entry-requirements-country.html Once notified by production, Parent/Guardian and child will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to fly to a Canadian airport, this costs $7 CAD which Blue Peter will reimburse.

Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted. Entries cannot be returned to entrants.

The prizes

16. The prizes consist of:

1st Prize: 1 Winner

  • You (and one parent or guardian) will have the opportunity to go to a dinosaur dig site with Blue Peter.

  • You will receive a VIP tour of the museum and dig, meet the team and experience a ‘day in the life’ of a palaeontologist.

  • You will be announced as winner of the competition on Blue Peter.

  • You will receive a framed certificate.

  • You will receive an Orange Blue Peter competition winner’s badge.

Top Runners up (x 3)

  • You will receive a framed certificate.

Top 10

The top 10 runners up that go through to the second round of judging receive an Orange Blue Peter competition winner's badge.

We reserve the right to change the prize due to editorial/production considerations including any restrictions which may be imposed or extended due to unforeseeable circumstances.

17. The BBC will obtain an appropriate child licence for the winner. The winner will be deemed to have agreed to be filmed during their time on location by the Blue Peter Production team. The parent/guardian of the winner will be required to sign contributor consent forms on behalf of their child/ward and themselves to allow the BBC to use the contributions in all media for all purposes.

18. Reasonable travel, food, and accommodation costs will be provided by the BBC for the winning child and a parent or guardian to attend the winner’s experience.

19. The prizes will be as stated. The prizes cannot be transferred and there is no cash alternative.

20. The winner will be notified from Friday 25th July by telephone, as per the contact details provided in their entry. In the event of the winner being unable to be contacted, after reasonable attempts have been made, or being unable to travel to Canada, or if the winner is found to be in breach of the rules, or fails to take up their prize for any reason including illness, unavailability, problems in having consent for absence from school, licensing difficulties, or problems with obtaining a sign off from their doctor regarding state of health to participate, the BBC reserves the right to offer the prize to the first runner-up but it is not obliged to do so.

21. The BBC's and the judges' decision as to the winner is final. No correspondence relating to the Competition will be entered into.

22. Entrants will be expected to take part in post-competition publicity for the BBC.

23. The BBC reserves the right to cancel the Competition or change any of these Rules at any stage if deemed necessary in its opinion or if circumstances arise outside of its control. Any such changes will be duly communicated. The BBC cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen events relating to, or the cancellation of any related element of this Competition outside of the control of the BBC. The BBC reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who breaches these Rules, has acted fraudulently in any way or has brought the BBC into disrepute.

24. The parent/guardian of an entrant is deemed to have accepted these Rules and when giving permission to the entry of the relevant entrant.

25. If any of the prize details must change, all efforts will be made to fulfil an equivalent once in a lifetime palaeontologist experience for the winner.

26. The competition complies with the BBC Code of Conduct for Competitions and Voting.

27. The BBC, Blue Peter, or Walking with Dinosaurs including any other organisation associated with the Competition accepts no liability for any damage, loss, liabilities (including direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damage) injury or disappointment incurred or suffered by you as a result of entering the Competition, not being able to enter the Competition or accepting any of the prizes. Nothing shall exclude the liability of the above parties for (i) fraud, (ii) for death or personal injury as a result of that party's negligence, or (iii) any other cause of action which cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law. In no event shall the BBC and/or any other organisation associated with the Competition’s total liability to you for all damages, losses, or causes of action exceed the price of the relevant prize.

28. If any of these clauses should be determined to be illegal, invalid, or otherwise unenforceable then it shall be severed and deleted from these Rules and the remaining clauses shall survive, remain in full force and effect.

29. These Rules shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any claim, dispute or matter arising under or in connection with these Rules.

30. Blue Peter is a production created by BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions and BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions are solely responsible for the Blue Peter Walking with Dinosaurs competition.
