St Lucia slammed by Tomas
At least 14 people have been killed by Hurricane Tomas in St Lucia. BBC News website reader Cuthbert Nathoniel sent in these pictures including this one taken outside Sufriere Hospital.
Cuthbert said: "The road along the front of the hospital is totally eroded by the river after overflowing its bank. Accessing the hospital is made possible by the erection of a wooden walkway across the eroded road."
He said trees and branches have been brought down by the overflowing river, here finally resting along the river bank.
People salvage what they can from the wreckage of their home in the aftermath of Tomas.
Here a steam has flooded a road. It was used by residents to clean any possessions they they were able to salvage.
Uprooted trees rest precariously o buildings. Cuthbert said: The old playing field nicknamed Old Trafford is akin to a landfill, courtesy of a raging river."
Boats which were pulled up to avoid surging waves were not safe from the destruction of inland water.
Hurricane Tomas had made the roads almost impassable. A heavy-duty road grader is buried in the rubble outside Sufriere hospital. | LOCAL LINKS Haiti braces for Tomas04 November, 2010 | News Tomas thunders on02 November, 2010 | News Hurricane Tomas in pictures02 November, 2010 | News
