Immobilised without mobile?
In some Caribbean countries mobile phone ownership exceeds the number of people in the population. The mobile - or cell - phone is also increasingly being used as a means of getting online. But, is Caribbean society becoming 'too attached' to the mobile/cell phone and its associated technologies and applaicatiions - or 'apps'. Does the mobile/cell phone, useful as it may be, risk becoming more of a hindrance than a help? In a recent Pew Internet & American Life Project report, Americans picked cell phones as the technology they can least go without. Studies also suggest that cell phones and other communication devices are interfering with personal relationships, classroom lectures, productivity at work, and traffic safety all over the world. Teenagers are said to be especially vulnerable. A study in China found that nearly one-third of high school students showed signs of addiction, including paranoia, when they were without their phones. In Britain, researchers concluded that people are so dependent on their cell phones that they see them as "an essential item, an extension of self." Also, I think many people are making the cell phone a priority over more important activities. It is a great tool to have but most people allow it to run their lives and as such it becomes a hindrance and a danger at times. | EXTERNAL LINKS The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites
