EPA protests in Ghana | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Activists from across Africa have joined hundreds of farmers and trade unionists in Ghana in a protest against proposed Economic Partnership Agreements with the European Union. The protesters marched through the streets of the Ghanaian capital, Accra, where a summit of leaders from African, Caribbean and Pacific countries is due to discuss the economic partnership agreements. The EPAs are designed to liberalise trade between the European Union and ACP countries, but activists say the terms are unfair. Meanwhile, Kenya's Deputy Trade Minister said he was optimistic that his country deal would reach an accord. Kenya, as part of the East African Community bloc, signed an interim deal in November to protect its farm and industrial products. The Caribbean is the only region to reach a comprehensive trade and services agreement, which most nations are expected to sign next month. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
