The new Prime Minister of Haiti, Michele Pierre-Louis has said her country has experienced ecological and economic disaster in the wake of the damage caused by four successive storms. Some 66 Haitians were killed and parts of the country remain cut off from the capital Port of Prince, following the passage of hurricane Ike last week. The unofficial death-toll from the four storms which slammed into the country in as many weeks stands at well over 700 people. Mrs Pierre-Louis, who took office last Friday after a tortuous confirmation process, told BBC Caribbean the most urgent need of stranded communities is for food and drinkable water. |
