Tree-planting world record attempts

Tree O'Clock was all about planting trees where you can, to make places just a little bit leafier. Why? Because trees are havens for wildlife, enjoyable to be around, pleasant to look at and can reduce air pollution.

But we were also thinking big. By involving as many of you as possible, Tree O'Clock set out to try to break two tree-planting world records.

Most trees planted by 100 people – new record set!

This world record is for trees planted by hand, by no more than 100 people, at a single site, within a single hour.

Guinness World Records have verified that Tree O'Clock teams at three sites each broke the existing record of 18,124.

  • 4,000 oaks were among 26,422 native trees put in the ground at Gransha Park, Londonderry by just 90 planters. That's officially a new world record for the team there, who were marshalled by Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland.

  • Near St Albans in Hertfordshire, the Woodland Trust – aided by scouts and military cadets – boosted London's green belt with 20,326 new trees at Heartwood Forest.

  • Another team of Woodland Trust volunteers in Hainault, east of London, helped to revitalise the historic Forest of Essex by planting 20,312 trees.

Most trees planted in multiple locations

This world record is for trees planted by hand, by any number of people, in multiple locations, within a single hour.

Every tree you planted between 11am and 12 noon on Saturday 5 December 2009 counted towards the attempt at breaking this record, if you sent us a picture too.

The verified total from all the Tree O'Clock planters worldwide was 230,000. Impressive for sure, but not a new Guinness World Record.
