Brazley Nature Area
This project is striving to develop and improve an underused site which is situated between two housing estates. For over five years, this area was perceived as the backyard, dumping ground by residents of both estates and it became a magnet for antisocial behaviour, giving the neighbourhood a poor overall impression.
The people
In 2005, Groundwork were able to work with residents from the estates and a steering group was formed. Since then, the residents have worked hard to clean up the site and since receiving their grant, the steering group has been busy moving the project forward and developing the Brazley nature area.
The recent activity at the site has prompted a local housing association to approach the group and offer support and funding to make further changes, including a stretch of fencing that will help prevent the fly-tipping. Funds have also been made available by Bolton council to go towards repairing and resetting artwork produced by local school children.
The group is also planning to produce a newsletter highlighting the improvements made to the area over the past few years and promoting a greater respect for the area amongst local residents. The group are also looking at how they can work with the local wildlife trust to improve the current habitat and also organise a programme of activities that will help local residents develop a greater appreciation of the space.
The project aims to transform this neglected area into a communal Breathing Place to be used as a resource for enjoyment by local residents and community groups.
The places

Central to the improvements at the site has been the installation and completion of a new path that has vastly improved access to the area and generally improved the image of the site. The group is now awaiting the arrival of litter pickers that will allow individual members to monitor the area and keep it clear of litter.
There are also plans to develop the site as a wildlife habitat - the group will work with local Wildlife Trust and local authority officers to identify existing habitats, and look at where improvements can be made. The schools and community will also be consulted to identify their priorities for attracting wildlife.
