Shiraz (in the foreground) on his wedding day in, well, Bradford...
Shiraz Butt has had to move from Bradford to London but he misses his home town and the beautiful West Yorkshire countryside. Above all, he misses what he calls the human touch!

A YORKSHIRE LAD IN LONDON
Go here to read it!

I am writing from a bit of a weird perspective. I am a 23-year-old male who has been born and bred in Bradford yet has had to move down to London for the purposes of my job.

There have been very few life changing experiences in my life but I have to say this is up there with the best.

When you are whisked away from the breathtaking views of Heaton woods, The Pennines and Yorkshire Dales and are living in London then you really do wonder how people can live without experiencing those wonders. But I'm sure Londoners have a similar argument about their city and us Yorkshire people. But that's another argument altogether.

I hope you've realised that as yet I haven't called myself a Londoner…well, its simple…IT IS BECAUSE I AM NOT ONE!... I have painstainkingly refused to alter any syllable of my wonderful and unique accent or my Yorkshire habits that are DETERMINATION, KINDNESS, TOUGHNESS, CHEEKINESS, WIT, and above all the HUMAN TOUCH.

The first couple of years were hard down in the South. In London people can tell you're a Yorkshire man but they can also be a bit ignorant. An example of this is when a guy told me I sound Irish!

Growing up in Bradford 5, near Central Avenue, moving across the city to Manningham and experiencing the vitality that Yorkshire gives a person I would strongly agree to the notion that being born and bred in Bradford has made me gain so much in terms of life experiences. I mean who in the UK has access to the wonderful wonders such as Haworth, Saltaire, the Yorkshire Dales andthe Cow and Calf rocks on their doorsteps??

Being a Yorkshire lad means a hell of a lot to me and don't you worry because I am flying the flag for Yorkshire down here in London and when I come up to Bradford every month I always have a smile on my face!!!!!!

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!
August 1st is Yorkshire Day and we'd like to know what you like most about our part of the world

Why are people so negative about Bradford? Its a great place and yes it has bad points as well as good,(like any other city!)People who 'diss' the city, well you just don't know what you're chatting about! You just need to explore the WHOLE of Bradford. You hear people going on about London but clearly it aint ALL that is it? I love my home and home to me will always be BRADFORD!!!

Shieraz, bradford
bradfords not all that, dnt get carried away. its no different to any other major city in respect to the people (u get all sorts everywhere) but its got nothing going forit in terms of growth/employment and development! Wake up people, and you cant give an optinion if you never lived outside of bradford! and a nite on wilmslow rd dnt count.

I am from Bradford and have been living in London for nearly a decade. All I can say is that it's the best move I ever made! Bradford's a dump... always has been and always will be.

Adam Dubbin, Gainesville, Florida, USA
I spent a year in Bradford from 2001-2002 studying at the Uni for MSc Arch Sci and I love so many aspects of the city- doner kebab, the pubs, walking around the city centre or playing football at the amphitheater. Not a day passes that I don't think back to the illustrious days I spent there. Good times at the Love Apple!
