History behind ‘The Lines of War’: Laser Scanning

This relatively new survey method uses laser technology to create a three-dimensional record. The laser sends out multiple beams, which are reflected back to the sensor, recording a ‘point cloud’ that enables the surface to be accurately modelled. Readings are taken with millimetre accuracy, and their frequency depends on the accuracy required. Texture is sometimes added by digital photography. Applications in archaeology range from recording artefacts, rock art, to the survey of entire landscapes, using scanners mounted onto an aeroplane.
