EVOLUTION EMERGING, NEWCASTLE.....

Post categories:

Tom TeamlaverneTom Teamlaverne|14:27 UK time, Tuesday, 25 May 2010

Ayup again

We had Bob Allen from the wonderful Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire on last week's show. He was talking to us not about his band, but about the Evolution Emerging festival in Newcastle, which takes place this weekend.

The kind man has offered us a guide to who's playing at the fest, and who you should go and see if you're heading up there. So without much further ado it's over to Bob, say hello everyone.

boballen.jpgVenue - The Cluny

Mammal Club are one of the most forward thinking indie bands in the area, their well-crafted cerebral sound blends synthesizers and samplers with crashing drums and sparse, yet effective, delay-drenched guitars that all of a sudden burst into life. At the same time as pushing the boundaries you'll be able to hear their understated quiet simplicity combined with plenty of melody. The band are currently playing throughout the UK and working on an upcoming release with Everybody's Stalking Records.

Venue - The Cluny 2

Soundtracks For A B-Movie are an emotive and affecting musical project conceived by Minotaurs guitarist Mick Ross, the eight-piece ensemble will be making one of their rare live outings to perform their cinematic pieces of ethereal bliss, originally created by Mick in his bedroom. The recorded tracks emit a satisfying glow from soaring soundscapes but you have to experience them live with full instrumentation to appreciate the effect that this kind of music can have on the hairs on the back of your neck.

Venue - Star & Shadow Cinema

Trafik are a progressive electro duo whose live and DJ sets have taken them around the world, with a style described as 'cinematic', 'aggressive' and 'epic'. Trafik have seen their music featured on TV, film and video game soundtracks as well as having remixes commissioned by UNKLE, Dave Seaman and Tilt. The new album 'Non But The Brave' is released on 21st June on Global Underground and their pulsing electronic sound is sure to get people moving at the Star & Shadow.

Venue - The Tyne

We Are Knuckle Dragger provide a more visceral, abrasive, heavy rock onslaught with plenty of huge riffs and guttural screams to keep the listener who chooses the more heavier path more than satisfied. The experimental punk outfit's explosive live show and recent single 'ME' released through Sapien Records has seen them receive praise from Radio1, Kerrang and Rock Sound.

Venue - The Cumberland Arms

Evolution Emerging's diverse lineup continues here with Dom P's hip hop trio Hellfire Club headlining the Cumberland Arms stage. Dom P has been producing and MCing since the age of 13 and has been involved in various successful projects, with Hellfire Club set to be no different. Their influences draw cover Big Brother and The Holding Company, John Lee Hooker and Jefferson Airplane to modern artists such as Jay-Z which proves to be the key to their diverse sound. They also play Generator's UMT:Emerging stage at the Evolution Weekender the following day.

Venue - The Tanners

Winter Hill Transmission bring a more stripped back, acoustic, indie folk sound to the table akin to Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear. The warm, dreamy sound gives a sense of escapism and the drums and keys are used to great effect to create a slow burning intensity as the luscious melodies glide over the perfect arrangements. The band are releasing a single later in the year and this intimate venue gives an ideal opportunity to see them live.

Thanks

Bob

Hi folks

Another week and I'm still feeling generous. Must be all the lovely weather that's been doing the rounds.

This week we've got two more ace bands popping in to face The Introducing Inquisition, Admiral Fallow, and Soundtracks For A B-Movie. They're polar opposites but we love both of them.

First up is Admiral Fallow, who we've been playing since they were called Brother Louis Collective. The name change has coincided with a real strengthening in their sound which is brooding, heartfelt, and above all beautiful. Don't believe me? Then try this free track on for size.

Admiral Fallow - Squealing Pigs

Now I can't offer you any free music from Soundtracks For A B-Movie but I can tell you that their post rock, post electronica, post everything album 'Misanthrope' is one of my current favourites and well worth a punt if you've got some spare pennies. They're streaming a good portion of the album on their website, so go have a listen.

Soundtracks For A B-Movie

As a bonus we've also got another slice of electronica in the form of Youth In Colour. They're giving away an entire ep for nowt, and i'd have paid at least double that. Seriously, it's great.

Youth In Colour - It's Difficult Sometimes, I Know EP

Hello new music fans

Well it's another week and we've got another two ace bands popping by to face THE INTRODUCING INQUISITION. In my continued good mood and, more importantly, in the spirit of sharing here's a FREE EP by one of them, Bristol's wonderful Planet Earth. It's from Music Glue and you'll have to submit your email if you want to download the tracks.

Planet Earth - For Modern Lovers EP

The other lot we've got coming in this week are Dinosaur Outfit. They're promising a free download of their ace track 'Young Hearts' over on their myspace page however it's not quite ready yet. While you wait why not check out this ace video of them performing said song in front of what looks like about 14000 people?

SIXTY ON 6: GLAD TO BE GREY

Tom RobinsonTom Robinson|10:52 UK time, Tuesday, 18 May 2010

Brian Eno, Kiki Dee, Tom Robinson, Laurie Anderson, Steve Harley

On Bank Holiday Monday I'm presenting a special one-off programme for 6 Music on the eve of my 60th birthday party, under the banner of GLAD TO BE GREY.

Those of us who grew up in the 60s are now hitting our own sixties - which is a strange feeling for my generation. A generation who (as Roger Daltrey sang) once hoped we'd die before we got old.

I'll be talking to contemporaries such as Brian Eno, fresh from curating the Brighton Festival, about the implications of hitting sixty for those of us who've worked freelance in the creative industries all these years.

Others like Laurie Anderson, Kiki Dee and Steve Harley will also be pitching in with stories about the challenges they too have faced over the decades - and offering advice to those looking to start out the creative industries today.

Above all, I'd like to hear from listeners who are also from the postwar generation, particularly if you too work in one of the creative industries, perhaps as a contactor or maybe as a freelancer. Do you love your job so much you want to carry on working after you pass retirement age, or are you in a position were you simply can't afford to give up?

And - with the money markets seemingly in semi-permanent meltdown - what options are open to those of us who are approaching retirement age and face an increasingly uncertain financial future?

With your help, perhaps we can explore the issues and tease out some answers on Bank Holiday Monday between 4-6pm here on 6 Music, together with some handpicked tunes from across the past 6 decades. Do share your experiences - and maybe offer some solutions of your own - either by leaving a comment below or emailing me direct at [email protected]

STREET TEAMS ? NO THANKS...

Tom RobinsonTom Robinson|17:13 UK time, Friday, 14 May 2010

"Calling all fans of THE VAMPING BLOODSUCKERS - if you want to really help our band please email the following DJs and ask them to play our new single Black Is The Night."
(Insert long list here, including the likes of Steve Lamacq, John Kennedy, Edith Bowman, Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Marc Riley, Mark Radcliffe, Stuart Maconie etc etc.)

It's an easy mistake - and many bands make it. Depending on the number of Facebook friends they have, anything up to a hundred emails will get sent to every programme on the list. Typically most of these will be a generic message, CC'd to all the shows at once, along the lines of:

Hay There
Please please pleas can you play "Black Is The Night" by The Vamping Bloodsuckers
- it's so great and their my favourite band and deserve to be herd on the radio.
Thanx (smiley face)

All radio shows need to have an email address so that listeners can get in touch. The biggest problem at our end is that genuine messages about the show get swamped by tidal waves of promotional spam from pluggers, club nights and indie labels alongside the inevitable Nigerian fraudsters, fake bank messages and offers to enlarge the programme's penis.

And that means some luckless member of the programme team has to go through the inbox every day deleting all the crap so as to find genuine emails from their actual listeners. If even five people request the Vamping Bloodsuckers on the same day, it's instantly obvious the band have put them up to it. Any further emails will get deleted on sight. And if you manage to clog up a working inbox with dozens upon dozens of messages, then you're fairly certain to get noticed and remembered by the all-important producer of the show. And not in a good way.

Whether a track gets played depends mostly on what it sounds like to the producer. And if it's not in the right style for the show (or simply sounds pants) no amount of emails from your fanbase will make it sound any different. The only thing that matters is getting the producer (or presenter) to actually listen in the first place.

Will getting a hundred emails make them more likely to seek out the Vamping Bloodsuckers from the hundreds of CDs stacked up on their desk? Not as such.

And yet it's still possible to make intelligent use of email to increase the chance of your record getting (at least) listened to. Here are your uncle Tom's suggestions:

1) Write personally to just one show at a time - don't send mass emails
2) No need to pretend to be someone else - it's fine to admit you're in a band
3) Actually listen to the show you're targeting, get to know its culture and how it works.
4) Email or text in while the show is on actually air.
5) Get their attention by emailing or texting funny or interesting comments on something you've heard on air. Take it slowly, once or twice per show is enough. Become a regular. If you sound like you're interested in them, they're more likely to be interested in you.
6) Once you've engaged with a programme, ask if "someone on the show" could give you some feedback on "this song we've got". Focus on just the one song. Give a URL where it can be heard online - Bandcamp, Soundcloud and Reverbation allow you to link direct to a song. A producer or presenter can check it out with a single click.

But when it comes to my Introducing: Fresh On The Net shows on 6 Music you don't have to jump through any of these hoops. Just nip along to our Recommend Music page and tell us about any great new music we can hear online, your own or anyone else's. There's no need to send us CDs or personalised emails - we listen to every single suggestion that comes through that page and if we like it, we'll play it - simple as that.

HELLO EVERYONE

Hello there blogosphere

I'm Tom's producer, you may have heard him refer to TW in the show a few times, well that's me. You can call me TW if you like but for the purposes of the blog I'm currently Producer Tom.

We've got a great set of guests on the show this week so I thought I'd share some tracks by them.

On Sunday we've got the very excellent Stairs To Korea, known to his folks and friends as Will Vaughan. We've been loving his new single 'Paul, Is This How You Wanted It?' but we also love his previous effort 'All Of Your Friends.'

Stairs To Korea - All Of Your Friends (Dreamtrak Session)

Then on Monday we've got the lovely This Many Boyfriends on the show. They're coming down to London to see Pavement and then they're coming to see us. I know which one they'll be looking forward to the most. Anyways here's their track 'That's What Diaries Are For.'

This Many Boyfriends - That's What Diaries Are For

Hope you enjoy them. I'll be trying to post more music by our guests on a weekly basis so watch this space.

BONUS SESSION TRACKS

Tom RobinsonTom Robinson|16:30 UK time, Thursday, 6 May 2010

During our recent BBC Introducing Week, 6 Music recorded session tracks by eight upcoming bands - all of whom have been championed by the national BBC Introducing network. There was only enough airtime to broadcast two or three tracks from each act, so here are the full sessions from two of my particular favourites who we've been championing on my 6 Music Introducing show: Fresh On The Net.
First up, Steve Lamacq picked ALLO DARLIN to record tracks at Maida Vale for his Monday show. Lammo's keen ear for a band on their way to greatness singled out this fast-rising London four-piece fronted by Elizabeth Morris, who've recently signed to Fortuna Pop records, home of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and The Tender Trap among others.
Take a listen, and you'll hear why.
Next up, recorded live on the Marc Riley show, it's Devon-born Joe Steer fronting his brilliant BROADCAST 2000 outfit. Although Joe played pretty much everything on the self titled debut album himself, live he performs accompanied by his own acoustic guitar plus a string trio, virtuoso glockenspiel, a young man beating the bejasus out of the Smallest Snare Drum In The World and Louise Golbey (no less) on backing vocals.
Check these tracks out, they're amazing:

We played an early demo of "The Last Bus" by London band Patch William on Introducing: Fresh On The Net back in late 2007 shortly after the show was first launched. A year later in November 2008 BBC Introducing recorded this performance of the song at Maida Vale. Fast-forward to May 2009 and the mastered version of "The Last Bus" produced by Steve Levine is up for an award at this month's Ivors. As a result, YouTube's Music Tuesday carried this Maida Vale footage today as a recommended pick on the front page. You couldn't ask for a better demonstration of why BBC Introducing matters.

The band look understandably terrified - first UK radio session, BBC's flagship studios, surrounded by lights and video cameras, no appreciative live audience to fire up the adrenaline - no pressures there, then. But at the same time you've got to love Will Adlard's elliptical lyric, yearning vocal and dazzling guitar stylings. By the time they played their recent session for my Friday show the band had grown in more ways than one, with a finished album under their belt and a far more assured performance. Two and a half years on hearing from the earliest version of this song, they're more than ever a band to watch.
