With a dinner date from hell fast approaching, “deluded Cheese Queen” Helen should prepare to be very disappointed if listeners’ predictions turn out to be correct.
Meanwhile, there’s some professional advice for Roy, memories of the Tregorrans and further concerns for Adam and Ian’s future.
Dominating the discussions, however, was “shallow, insensitive” Susan as she tormented Neil and then excelled at what she does best: gossiping.
Here’s my pick of the listener discussions between 10 and 16 July 2014.
With the dinner date set, many listeners were dubious about what lay in store for Helen and her appointment with the in-laws. Would they show up – and would they really be Rob’s parents?
Clear the diary for Friday night - mustn't miss the dinner party from hell #thearchers (@2ndcitysuit on Twitter)
Oh Helen. You poor deluded Cheese Queen. #thearchers (@SissyJupe58 on Twitter)
Very much looking forward to #Rob'sImaginaryParents #thearchers (@Odoreida on Twitter)
Oh Helen. Preparer of wondrous sandwiches...prepare to be very disappointed..... (Liz Tierney on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
I still can't quite workout where the whole Rob/Helen thing is going, apart from downhill obviously! (Caroline McHale on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Maybe creepy Rob and Helen will receive an elderly couple for a visit but are they really Rob's parents? I'd guess he'd organized some acquaintances or even cheap actors to play his mother and father just to lull Helen again. Arrrrghhhh, I just HATE people like Rob and even more do I detest women like Helen! (Bettina Strzoda on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Will the future in-laws please point out their son is still married unless I have missed the quickie divorce. Did Jess just go quietly or are the future in-laws going to turn up with Jess??? (Ginette Elaine Barr on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
From one potentially doomed relationship to another, many had words of advice for Roy if he wants to remain in employment – and his marriage to poor Hayley.
Noooo Roy stop! I feel a P45 coming on! #thearchers (@GeeHubb on Twitter)
Roy Tucker: Snog, marry or sack? Which will Elizabeth choose? #thearchers (@willemharvey on Twitter)
I think Roy is going to need a new job. Elizabeth has tried to let him down gently but he refuses to take a hint. (Andrea Meling on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
Poor Hayley and the children. Can't believe that Roy would forget them so easily! I am deeply saddened for his family! (Dorothea Marten on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
To hell with Roy. It's Hayley who matters. (RosieT on The Archers blog)
Roy needs to read Lady Chatterley's Lover - it will explain everything. (Hazel Chowcat on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
As the sad news that John Tregorran had died reached Ambridge, many listeners enjoyed reminiscing about past storylines.
The actual words, 'John Tregorran', used to fascinate me, They still take me back to hearing 'The Archers' coming out of my grandparents' dark brown wireless in the dining-room corner, and Granny and Granddad chuckling, exclaiming, making mild tutting noises, or, at extreme moments, being driven to the ultimate - 'Well! ...' ! (Elnora Cornstalk on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Those were the days. I loved John's voice. (Dorothy Drew on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Great 'blast from the past' stuff for those of us who've listened for decades. I seem to remember also that Carol was accused of shop-lifting although it was only a moment of absent-mindedness. (Nemo399 on The Archers blog)
I have been listening to the Archers since day 1 and the Tegorrans had moved off my radar. Now they are back, well one of them is. It was a nice interlude to get us away from the other doom and gloom that is filling the Archers story-lines at the moment. (witchneedles on The Archers blog)
i remember john tregorran and jennifer getting a little too close..#thearchers (@MelparkerMel on Twitter)
Back in the present day, concerns persist about the true nature of Adam and Charlie’s sparring relationship, though some believe that Charlie isn’t entirely the problem.
Oooh, is Charlie going to burst their hot tub bubble? #thearchers (@LadyDanni1 on Twitter)
Charlie this Charlie that, shut up Adam ! (Sue Pidgeon on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Sorry but Charlie really doesn't get my gaydar spinning. I don't think there's any danger of him and Adam getting together. (Sophie Allen on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
If Adam turns out to be a serial philanderer, can we blame it on Brian's influence? How much was he around Brian as a child? He always seemed to be elsewhere - was it boarding school or did he live with his father? (Bridget Deutsch on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
So, Adam and Ian. Three months? Place your bets! #thearchers (@greebstreebling on Twitter)
I think Ian and Adam will be Ok. Surely even soap couples don't split up because one partner suffers from over -work and stress? (Christine Wilson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Let’s hope Susan doesn’t add the couple to her list of gossiping topics, though many listeners would enjoy it if she did as she’s been on “wonderfully awful” form lately.
#thearchers I love Susan. We need more gossiping in Ambridge, then we'll know what's going on behind the scenes (@knitty1956 on Twitter)
RadioSoosan in full, tactless flow there. Glorious! #thearchers (@purplehelen on Twitter)
Susan really is one of the best love-to-hate characters on The Archers . I am very glad I don't live with her or near her but Charlotte Martin is superb in the way she brings the monster to life. (Bob Cant on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Susan is simply awful and has been for a very long time. I'm waiting...waiting for her come-uppance for what she did to Shula and her relationship with St. Stephens! (Elena Graves on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Susan is dreadful! Such a wonderfully awful listen..... I'm always so relieved that she doesn't live near me. (Fiona Siobhan Powell on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
As glorified pig man Neil earned his manager’s overalls, Susan’s “bully” tactics were duly condemned, even if her behaviour did make for an entertaining listen.
Sour Sooosan was priceless tonight, made me laugh out loud at #TheArchers. "You'll need new overalls now you're a Mannijer". (@Barwickgreen on Twitter)
Oh good grief Susan - when all is said & done Neil is still a pig man. #thearchers (@busydawn on Twitter)
Get the crampons, Susan's social climbing again. #thearchers (@TVAlisonGraham on Twitter)
Susan really is shallow, insensitive, a two-faced gossip and generally vile. I can't stand the way she treats Neil, or Ed for that matter. (Francesca Heather-Hayes on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Err excuse me but Susan's nagging has just got Neil 50 pc of the profits. Neil seemed pretty pleased about it. (Mo Smith on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
