Listeners have made more than one reference to ‘The Omen’ this week as Hazel and George cause trouble in Ambridge.
Over at Bridge Farm, listeners take sides as Rob joins them for Pat’s awkward birthday dinner.
Roy’s bright idea for a music festival at Lower Loxley has fired the imagination; as has Susan’s lottery win…
Here’s my pick of the listener discussions between 9-15 January 2014.
Here comes Hazel Woolley! Most listeners relished her “deliciously vile” performance at the funeral – and praised Anette Badland’s portrayal. Could she be persuaded to stay in Ambridge? Though a handful thought her character had too much of the “pantomime villain” about her and can’t wait to see her go.
HAZEL! *cue The Omen music* #TheArchers (@thecaromac on Twitter)
Oh Hazel is causing a stir! Goody! #theArchers (@MrsPanad on Twitter)
@BBCTheArchers ah, the deliciously vile Hazel. Great actress, super writing... we need characters like that to stir the mix! (@orichalcumbrass on Twitter)
@BBCTheArchers@BBCRadio4 Hazel... the Rottweilers..Rottweiler #thearchers (@salvatorRosa on Twitter)
Hazel is a brilliant character. If it's not already done please have Jack's will stipulate she moves to Ambridge ASAP (@ohchrisburton on Twitter)
Dear @BBCTheArchers - please find a reason for Hazel Woolley to stay around. She's hilarious. (@Gary_Gillat on Twitter)
Sorry, but Hazel sounds too much of a caricature - wish the role had been toned down slightly to be dramatic and irritating, but slightly more credible . . . (Jill Anthony-Ackery on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
I disagree, it makes it more fun when you get an over the top characterisation. Some people really are like this in life and usually totally unaware how they come over to others. (Christopher Bull on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Magnificent manoeuvring by Peggy to satisfy Horrid Hazel without compromising the arrangements she had discussed with Jack... How self-controlled and patient not to shout "And when did you last see your Father?!" Pat could take a few lessons on how to tackle difficult situations and should not have put Kirsty and Tom in such awkward positions. (Jean Bell on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Rob Titchener’s appearance at Pat’s birthday dinner had most picking sides. And Rob’s comment likening Helen to Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles raised eyebrows…
Ah Tess, doesn't she get deserted by a cad and die tragically? #thearchers (@clioclothed on Twitter)
Pat's dinner party is going to be in no way awkward. #thearchers (@ceefaxisbetter on Twitter)
[And just before the omnibus…] I so wish I hadn't already listened to #thearchers this week. If you're about to tune in to the omnibus you're in for a treat. #dinnergate (@hannahbeckerman on Twitter)
In the blue corner it’s #TeamPat
#thearchers oh Helen you're asking too much of your mum...on her birthday too! (@Curlyloxxxxx on Twitter)
Helen would never have coped these last few years without the help of her parents, therefore it's just good manners to keep them in the picture, and it's GROSSLY DECEITFUL to lie to them the way she has… Someone tell her that she can't have her cake and eat it. (Nutmeg Cat on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Yes, poor Rob. Having to go thru a marriage with a woman who doesn’t do as she's told. He'd have made a perfect Victorian Dad. It could be a new by-law "a woman disagreeing with Robert Titchener shall be placed in ye stocks". (Tim Walker on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
I woke up at 4am disturbed by my thoughts - about the Archers! Where is Jess? We only have Rob's word that she left. Is she under the patio? Is Rob a murderer? Is Helen in danger? (Wendy Bailey on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
And in the red corner… #TeamHelenandRob
The more Pat handwrings, the more I like adulterous, deceitful, clearly-terrific-in-the-sack Rob. #thearchers (@paultrueman74 on Twitter)
Goodness me - but Pat is being HORRID. I am now firmly #teamhelenandrob#thearchers(@TheListWriter on Twitter)
Pat would drive me NUTS. If she were my mother I would have emigrated by now … Pat - get a life! (Margaret Lesley Gladstone on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
About time Helen found love what with all those smug couples in Ambridge. Rob did try to repair his marriage with the whiney, sugary, annoying Jess who displayed more passion over Jennifer’s kitchen and the wretched salmon than she did him. Who can blame Helen for falling into those strong arms (Crista Baxter on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Pat (and Tony) have disliked Rob from the very first, for no other reason that he worked at the mega dairy. I don't believe that his being married or his subsequent affair with Helen has made Pat's feelings any more intense. She already hated him regardless. (Sam Stone on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
Pat, back in her favourite place, wallowing in her own self-pity. #thearchers (@BlackpoolAndy on Twitter)
When it comes to young George Grundy, most think Ed, Emma and Will need to take a firmer hand in his upbringing – but perhaps it’s too late?
Don't go up the stairs on your own Ed, Damien is alive and has it in for you! (Sakuntala Layla Della Jovan on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
George is a horrid brat who doesn't deserve a puppy. Nasty Will has poisoned his mind. (Karen Hudson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Ed needs to grow up and get on with Will. They are both terrible role models to that boy, no wonder he's a little monster! (Angela Russell on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
@BBCTheArchers Emma being utterly limp. She needs to scotch this nonsense, not say 'ooh that's not very nice, George'. Rubbish parenting. (@cmrpemberton on Twitter)
Will should get over himself, he has led a charmed life in comparison to Ed. Ed is always struggling with the guilt of stealing Emma but is really the better man. George is very good at manipulating the situation to his own advantage and needs a firmer hand. (Gill Ogden on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Roy Tucker’s idea of a music festival at Lower Loxley caught the imagination… but perhaps not quite in the way Roy was envisaging…
Fallon’s band could play. Tom could have his sausage van. Linda could sell alpaca throws. It would be immense #thearchers (@Sophabed on Twitter)
Loxlo! (Sue Holt on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Bert Fry will definitely be on the poetry stage #thearchers (@willemharvey on Twitter)
@BBCTheArchers Jennifer in a yurt? You have got to be joking. (@jmbs1955 on Twitter)
Elizabeth would appreciate the 'glamping' crowd (Polly Pearshouse on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
And finally, many were happy for Susan after she won the lottery but doubt she can keep it secret.
Yay! A genuine good news story! Congrats, Susan :) #thearchers (@Belladax on Twitter)
Susan Carter keep 4 grand a secret? Neil's pigs have already been cleared for take-off... #thearchers (@Horhan_Legal on Twitter)
Who's going to tell Clive his sister's got four and a half grand, then? (Richard Gilbert on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
