The difference between Lilian and Kate is Lilian has not, by and large, been the author of her own misfortune. By the time she was Kate's age she had been widowed twice. Her most recent long-term partner went to prison, then ran off with all her money. She's been an overindulgent, rather than a neglectful mother. She's worked hard at running her own businesses.
