"Oh Neil... were you very masterly?" trilled Susan, in February 2016 when he marched home after underlining his position as an equal partner in the management of the pigs at Bridge Farm.
What Susan didn't realise is that Neil didn't have to do any persuading. Neil doesn't need to be masterly - he's a good man - principled, understanding and kind. Most people recognise that. Tom offered him the partnership before Neil had taken a bite of his biscuit at the negotiating table. Likewise, when David discovered that Josh had 'liberated' Neil's hens and added them to the Fairbrothers' flock in order to generate more pastured eggs, he was spitting feathers... if you'll excuse the pun.
It wasn't long before Josh was around at Neil's, with his tail between his legs, and a conciliatory bottle of whisky. As ever, gentleman Neil was measured and diplomatic. Imparting some wise words about business, life and the dangers of trying to impress the likes of Toby Fairbrother. Whether Josh takes note, remains to be seen...
