Helen "Stepford" Archer’s dinner invitation to Adam and Ian left listeners in little doubt that Rob is a worryingly controlling type – and they were thankful that "total star" Ian wasn’t won over by his charm.

Brenda's return to Ambridge prompted much speculation about her new fiancé Adrian while, on the subject of tying the knot, Alice’s appointment as Tom and Kirsty's wedding planner had a mixed response.

And what's up with Ruth? …

Here’s my pick of the listener discussions between 6 and 12 March 2014

The calls for Helen to "run like the wind" from Rob were louder than ever in the wake of their awkward dinner with Adam and Ian

Her story is a tragedy almost Hardyesque in its depth and pathos. Thank goodness Ian can see through that bounder. (@PhilipPullman on Twitter)

Dear lord please tell me he did not change the supper menu ! And is he criticising her hair ?? Yellow card! @BBCTheArchers (@costlytrinket on Twitter)

One of us can rescue Henry, one Helen, and the rest of us should go for Rob en masse, each armed with our own wok - poetic justice. (Olafthe Lofty on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Up until now, there was still some ambiguity/room for interpretation, but now we've heard Rob control Helen in every way (choice of food, dealing with Henry, her hair, time to serve the pudding and WORSE STILL that vile 'Little Miss Giggly' remark about the wine, there can be no going back!!! (Nemo399 on The Archers blog)

Rob’s true, controlling colours are on display tonight. Run, Helen! Run like the wind! #thearchers (@marzillk on Twitter)

Love is blind but also deaf. Rob just needs to be in control all the time. How much will Helen let him control poor Henry though. Just hope she doesn't put Rob before her son. (Ginette Elaine Barr on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

ARGH! I'm not sure how much more Rob I can take @BBCTheArchers #TeamStirFry (@claire_cole on Twitter)

If Helen is the victim of Rob's manipulative streak, then Ian is shaping up to be a potential hero – even if he some would like him to do more than just voice his disapproval

I am with the lovely Ian on this one - Rob needs thumping. (Ira Bott on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I loved that dinner epi with Adam and Ian curling up in increasing fury and Rob and Helen congratulating themselves on how well it had gone. (cath on The Archers blog)

I wasn't overly keen on Ian previously but I love him now.... he is one of us :-0 (Pauline Hakeney on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Ian and Adam are so on to Rob #thearchers (@Sophabed on Twitter)

Ian is a total star! He rocked yesterday. Of course, dopey Helen thought it was a wonderful evening... (Claire Kulagowski on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Yes! Ian has noticed Hellin has moved to Stepford! I knew we could rely on him! #TheArchers @BBCTheArchers (@amoc44 on Twitter)

Hello Brenda! As she arrived back in Ambridge, listeners were taken aback by her news from Wapping

Ooooooh! #Brendasnews #TheArchers (@Bethan1967 on Twitter)

Adrian? ADRIAN!!! Brenda and Adrian? #TheArchers (@all_sweetness on Twitter)

Already met a guy in London and is engaged? Give me a break! That's just way too easy. (Moya Stone on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I wanted Brenda to be back with Dmitry, whom she met in Russia. He was lovely and really seemed to love her! (Sarah Bryan on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

LOVED Brenda's comment about the BLT, "Not quite so independent, then?" (Rosie Taylor on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

So it’s OK for Tom to be engaged, but not Brenda? That's a double standard. I think had Tom married her long ago instead of just shacking up, they wouldn't have broken up. If anything, for a couple that is not knocked up, Tom is rushing to the altar. (Del Williams on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Having married in secret in Las Vegas, Alice wasn't the obvious choice for some listeners when it came to being Tom and Kirsty's wedding planner – though many remain optimistic

Cool choice. I like Alice (Corin Warden on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I think Alice did the right thing re her wedding. Imagine Jennifer and Susan fighting over the wedding plans! (Christine Jones on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Alice planning the wedding will be fun! (Lorna McLaren on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Alice clearly has too much time on her hands. (Susan Feltham on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Yeah! ALICE! She can design high-tech weapons systems, I BET she'll want to help with the bouquet #TheArchers (@TheMichaelMoran on Twitter)

Alice a wedding planner? Tom you need to visit Peggy again! #thearchers (@JulieA57 on Twitter)

And finally, some listeners are worried about Ruth after her moodiness towards Jill

If Ruth is ill I'm going to be really very cross with #thearchers (@alison_muz on Twitter)

Now really worried about Ruth. And I don’t think it’s just irritation that her mother-in-law is living with them. #thearchers (@Annette1Hardy on Twitter)

Ooooo. Touchy. Mood swings. Definitely menopausal. #thearchers #ruth (@fairy_with_haiir on Twitter)

… what is wrong with Ruth? All this feeling faint & sitting down, not like her at all (@KirstieMAllsopp on Twitter)

Ruth really must go to the doctors. Hasn't Eddie been yet either? I trust he's still off sick since they're still doing the milking. (Jill Nicholls on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Sigh......sometimes I wonder why I am into soaps! Resent having to worry about Ruth & her secret illness. If she went to a medical appointment, why not just tell David?!x (Maggie Mumford on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Dear @BBCTheArchers, don't you dare do anything to our Ruth *shakes fist* #TheArchers (@CelloSuze on Twitter)

The @BBCTheArchers has finally hooked me in...& I fear for Ruth! (@TeamMeatBalls on Twitter)
