"OMG! Elizabeth! Roy! OMG!" – Listener discussions to 25 June 2014

It was widely predicted by listeners but Roy and Elizabeth’s festival antics still resulted in shock and a flurry of #horrifiedselfies posted on Twitter.

Thankfully, Lilian and Lynda lightened the mood with their ongoing knitting competition while David threatened to go even more Wicker Man than usual. Elsewhere there was a scintilla of sympathy for Shula amid the strangles outbreak and mounting speculation about who’s the right man for Fallon.

Here’s my pick of listener discussions between 19 and 25 June 2014.

Elizabeth took to festival life a lot better than she expected, but did she and Roy leave their true characters at the Greenbury Fields’ gates? Not everyone thought so.

Oh Lizzie don't cop off with Roy! It's such bad widow PR. #lockupyourhusbands/wives/partners/pets #thearchers (@nikkijenkins333 on Twitter)

No words for just how soiled I feel right now #thearchers #RoyLizTentCoitus (@ConnorKinsella on Twitter)

Dear Ambridge script writers, I have known Roy all my life and I don't think he would do that. #thearchers (@caltew on Twitter)

I was hoping all the clumsy pointers were just a bluff but I became deeply suspicious when they were playing Pulp's 'common people' in the car en route to the festival. Why? Sw, this is another case of characters behaving out of character. (Athene Richford on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

#TheArchers THIS IS ALL WRONG. (@SardineTin on Twitter)

For goodness sake. Just heard Elizabeth and Roy at the festival. Please stop getting all the characters to have affairs. It's getting to be like Eastenders. (Joanne Dugmore on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I think that it is entirely believable that Woy and Elizabeth had a cider fuelled “quickie”. But I find it hard to believe that Woy planned for it, as appears to be the case. (Bill Gill on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

I remember thinking there was a frisson of something between Roy and Elizabeth when he was still 'on loan' from GG. He has become the man she depends on at work and this feeling of reliability has transferred into something more personal. (Jill Anthony-Ackery on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Elizabeth's behaviour at the Festival is actually the result of all the traumas she has endured. She has suddenly realised that she is alive and not ready to give up on life... I think we should celebrate these storylines...bring it on!! (Lisa Sallis on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

What will become of this “fine mess” then? Few listeners are quite sure – though many believe that it’s a bigger deal to Roy than it is to Elizabeth.

If that's the end of Elizabeth and Roy I'll eat my Loxfest programme. #thearchers (@SarahPalmerEdit on Twitter)

Oh. My. Days!!!!!!!! Can't believe it. Could see it coming but still.... How's this going to end.... (Cheryl Beckwith on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Now we sit back and await the repercussions. ....... #thearchers Bring it on ! (@northdevontwit on Twitter)

When 'Ayley finds out, (which she will) it's going to be Loxstock and two smoking barrels #TheArchers (@SuzanneRoynon on Twitter)

Roy. You are married with a family and a lovely wife. Do not entertain any more romantic thoughts about the jumped-up, spoilt, entitled brat that you call a boss. (Cathy Simpson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Lizzie is Lizzie and has always since childhood had a selfish side. So it will be simple for her to brush it off as a nice distraction. I think Roy will be less likely to forget it and that is where the SL goes. (Sue Scanlan on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Meanwhile, Lilian was getting herself tied up in knots for entirely different reasons – and many listeners enjoyed her awkward knitting discussion with Lynda.

How totally daft of Lillian to pretend to have knitted a matinee jacket. (Lorna McLaren on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Oh Lilian. Shameless but you won't fool Lynda! #thearchers (@JulieA57 on Twitter)

Loving the Lillian matinee coat deception!!! (Gaye Hillary on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Are we looking at a jacket or solving a murder? #Knitgate #TheArchers (@Emily_Thomas73 on Twitter)

Lynda and Lillian are becoming a very welcome double-act. Always funny to hear them trying to out-do each other. (Sally Yerbury-Brown on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

'And tonight on 'The Archers', Lilian will teach us how to make a nice wicker cage... (Judith Cooke on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

It wasn’t quite the full Wicker Man inferno but David’s bonfire – along with the familiar-looking guy – was seen as symbolic of his attitude to the proposed road through Ambridge - Route B.

All very Wicker Man. Even more than usual #chanting #thearchers #routeB (@SmithPeterScott)

Check that bonfire for hedgehogs...and road planners... #TheArchers @BBCTheArchers (@Cardifolderol on Twitter)

The Archers does The Wicker Man. No doubt the community would want to see Rob take the place of Edward Woodward. (Grant ‘Rudolph’ Smith on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

David you have to fight with whatever you have. It will be no good 'after the event'. It is your livelihood after all. Cannot understand Ruth. I always thought she was the fiery one. (Marguerite Turpin on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Phew, back to wholesome country pursuits like burning effigies - that's a relief! (Clare Hughes-Cross on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

How will anyone take David seriously after that childish display? Back to the Middle Ages! (Janet Hitchen on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

At last a small amount of support for Shula, though some listeners believe it’s not strangles that should be her primary concern.

Hate Shula but strangles is awful - cleaned the quarantine yard for a stables with it for a week - poor horses. #thearchers (@MagneticFlea on Twitter)

The way Shula was carrying on you'd think Alistair had diagnosed anthrax. I suppose we might be heading down an antibiotic resistance story arc. (David Clarke on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Schadenfreude. Sorry for the horses NOT for Shula. (Elliott William James on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I'd be a lot more worried about her marriage if I was Shula.....xx (Lisa Eveleigh on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

The unsaid stuff between Shula and Alistair is palpable. I reckon it goes back to the Darrell business. (Rosemary Harradine on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

As for Fallon, what are PC Burns’ intentions – and many are still hoping that it’s Jazzer who will steal her heart in the end.

FALLON JUST CALLED HIM HARRISON! #thearchers Can true love be far off? Poor Jazzer, losing out to a copper. (@RadioAmbridge on Twitter)

If I lived in Ambridge I'd go on a big crime spree to keep PC Carpet burns away from Fallon, I bet that's why the Joker does it #TheArchers (@kingbagcarrier on Twitter)

#thearchers Come on Jazzer, give us a song and Fallon a snog! (@verabling on Twitter)

I just wish Jazzer would declare his love for Fallon and she can have a when Harry met Sally moment and realise, finally, that they were meant to be... (Sumi Olson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
