RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Chelsea was already buzzing when we arrived at 7.30am. The medal winners were about to be announced! We got a list of those gardens that had won Best In Shows and Golds, and Editor Sean O’Connor worked with Sunny Ormonde (Lilian) and Carole Boyd (Lynda) to weave them into tonight’s script.

Carole – as Lynda – had some tricky pronunciations which needed checking out – we visited the Laurent-Perrier Garden, designed by Luciano Giubbilei, and the Best Artisan Garden, Togenkyo – A Paradise on Earth, designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara. Carole delivered the lines as Lynda would, with an accented flourish!

Recording spots were chosen for their ambient sound – gardens with running water, for example, and the Pavilion. Sound engineer, Andy Partington, took extra recordings of the hubbub of the Flower Show – the chatter, the brass band, the public announcements and birdsong.

Between takes, Carole and Sunny talked about their own gardens and which clematis were best – Montana and ‘Betty Corning’, if you’re interested.

Editor Sean O'Connor kept an eye on the script hich left room for some extra dialogue once we were at the show.

As soon as the scenes were done, the recording was then hurried back to Broadcasting House to edit for tonight’s show...
