That awkward lunch at Bridge Farm, Hayley’s magnificence, Mungo’s name, Brian’s wanton strumpet and the Ambridge microclimate have all been debated this week.
Here’s my pick of the listener discussions between 11 and 17 September 2014.
Thursday’s lunch at Bridge Farm with all the family had many cringing – should Johnnybe trusted? Was Peggy being unfair?
Great Gran? Awks. #thearchers (@GillAllard on Twitter)
Johnny a bit creepy, cosying up so rapidly. Cuckoo in the nest. #TheArchers (@JuliaLeeAuthor on Twitter)
I don’t trust johnny. #thearchers (@gracedent on Twitter)
Didn't like Peggy's smug comment to Pat about getting Johnny back to Leeds...smacked of Peggy being conned/persuaded to be on Rob & Helen's plus young inheritor Henry's side (Ruth Edwards on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
I have no idea why Peggy was such a cow about Johnny. Charitably, she might be upset at home taking the place of her darling Tom. Uncharitably, she is a raging snob. Rob is definitely playing the long game. (Helen Grint on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
@BBCTheArchers bit harsh Peggy re Jonny!! He's obviously going to stay.. (@Organick on Twitter)
Actually, on my second listening, I didn't think Peggy was particularly nasty, and certainly not directly to Rich / johnny . I think she was just being realistic when she spoke to pat and she has always been straight-talking.. (Pat Hobden on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
The new boy is definitely a typical Bridge Farm Archer. As single-minded as a buzzsaw and to hell with all the consequences. (@Rainbow_Worrier on Twitter)
Johnny Johnny Johnny Johnny..... got his feet well and truly under the haystack. #thearchers (@sheepurs on Twitter)
Listeners were relieved when Hayley finally confronted first Elizabeth, then Roy. And there was much praise for Lorriane Coady for her performance.
Woop! Woop! *showdown klaxon* #thearchers (@psalotti on Twitter)
#thearchers The locket! Hurrah! It's all out now. (@allanahansell on Twitter)
The Hayley actress been waiting for that plot moment for years. And she rose to it brilliantly. #thearchers (@DAaronovitch on Twitter)
The more I listen to Lorraine Coady's performance the more I think if she doesn't get awards for that performance as Hayley on Friday, then it's a travesty. Superb acting. Really got a lump in the throat. (Martin Bennett on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Bravo Hayley. Women everywhere should keep this episode #thearchers (@rororoses on Twitter)
So moved tonight by @BBCTheArchers I actually had to leave the kitchen sink and sit down! #brilliantacting#roy#hayley#thearchers (@nikkipepps83 on Twitter)
#thearchers Finally, after years of subservient mouseishness, Hayley reverts to her old character. (@DanzacRose on Twitter)
Roy is deluded, Hayley and the children will be so hurt the grass isn't always greener on the other side, very often it's weedy and nasty (like Roy himself!) and Elizabeth comes off as dreadfully cold and unfeeling. (Emma Bryan on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
He ain't worth your spit Hayley #thearchers (@EmmaRawsthorne1 on Twitter)
Don't listen to him Hayley!! (GinnyW on The Archers blog)
@BBCTheArchers The expletives I'm shouting at Roy via the radio are hopefully putting my husband off having an affair anytime soon #EvilRoy(@VictoriBleazard on Twitter)
I think she's being really noble. A bit of Humanity is much needed in this world. Roy is an eeejut, but I'm up for reconciliation with these two. (Sue Harrison on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
Every saccharin thing Roy says leaves a very bitter after-taste. #thearchers (@tabby_whisperer on Twitter)
Hayley may decide she can't forgive Roy (and who can blame her?) but that won't necessarily make her happier. Sometimes it takes more courage to ignore the advice and try again. Being on your own is tough - ask Elizabeth. (Ali Woodlands on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
And so to Mungo Bellamy. Listeners have mixed feelings about his name, but some live in hope…
Where I come from, Mungo IS normal...St Mungo performed miracles...maybe the poor child can do something about his parents..lol (Una Heaney on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Mungo, I was so looking forward to my first "Mowgli" in main stream education #thearchers (@Elmo14641 on Twitter)
Mungo jerry? Mungo park? Mungo jumbo? Or is that jumbo jumbo? POOR KID #thearchers (@iowauthor on Twitter)
One of Hugh Grant's middle names is Mungo.. So it can't be so bad . Can it? (Jean Moodie on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
Over at Home Farm, Brian and Jennifer were playing footsie (oh, and discussing Jenny’s inheritance from John Tregorran). Line of the week goes to Brian for his ‘wanton strumpet’
Brilliant Brian I'll be using wanton strumpet at the first opportunity #thearchers (@Cuttsrich on Twitter)
#TheArchers Has Brian been on the tonic wine?! (@ThatJoelfella on Twitter)
Could Brian possibly be more interested in money than fidelity? #thearchers (@EmmaRawsthorne1 on Twitter)
Jenny goes above and beyond..... Giving a legacy to Brian's love child. That'll be thank you for the kitchen then. @BBCTheArchers (@mumislast on Twitter)
Yes, I'm not usually very sympathetic to Jennifer but I respect the way she has included Ruari in her family. It shows great strength of character. (Maureen Parr on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
My opinion of Jenny just went up in leaps and bounds. How generous. And the antithesis of Peggy and her divisive ways. #TheArchers (@Evidently_Z on Twitter)
I think she's a saint...when she said to Carol that Ruari was her son i could have have kissed her. (Freddy Ferret on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
The deluge on Wednesday surprised listeners as well as Ambridge residents. Was it a sign?
@BBCTheArchers What's brought on this Biblical flood? I blame Roy and Elizabeth. (@susiek227 on Twitter)
LINDA SNELL, THIS IS GOD SPEAKING. MUNGO IS A RUBBISH NAME. U HAVE BEEN WARNED #thearchers (@EdinburghTom on Twitter)
Bad weather in #thearchers? Where is Ambridge? (@Emily_Thomas73 on Twitter)
The driest September since records began......... except in Ambridge. (Hils Sharpe on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Aaah the Borsetshire microclimate #thearchers#flood (@hattysc on Twitter)
But the next day, much of the rest of the country experienced a downpour prompting listeners to wonder if Archers scriptwriters have special powers?
I thought it was odd having thunder and heavy rain on TA last night and then we had exactly that in Portsmouth this morning. Spooky. (Christopher Brown on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
