Listeners were moved by Peggy’s performance, dealing with Jack’s death. There was glee at the prospect of a visit from “unscrupulous” Hazel Woolley. Omnibus listeners tuned in early to hear Pat’s reaction to Helen’s news.
And as Tony “regenerates” listeners say thanks to Colin Skipp and welcome David Troughton to the role.
Here’s my pick of the listener discussions between 2-8 January 2014.
Peggy’s “star performance”, as she came to terms with Jack’s death, was widely praised this week. And as The Archers played out to Al Bowlly’s ‘Love Is The Sweetest Thing’ in place of Barwick Green, many listeners shed a tear
Caught out then. Peggy saying goodbye to Jack to the sounds of the wonderful Al Bowlly. Wipes away a tear (@helenmburrows on Twitter)
Sweet... So right... I cried... (Sue Pegrum on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Lovely episode tonight. Proper Archers. (Janice Beston on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Not surprised at Peggy's muted reaction, having had a close relative die who had dementia. She'd lost the real Jack long ago. #thearchers (@JillRowan1 on Twitter)
Just goes 2 show wot a silly-sod I am Lillian's @BBCTheArchers performance 2nite really got 2 me Lip-trembles galore! (@AdamsSuzanne on Twitter)
Very well done. Made me shed a tear and I'm normally more the dark humour type. (JustJanie – Fairweather Strider on The Archers blog)
A sad and moving end which was acted out extremely well by Peggy. It mirrored the passing of my father in August, and I was particularly moved by the similarity when Peggy announced that she had 'lost him a long time ago'... (Bianca Castafiore on The Archers blog)
Peggy's star performance will go down as a truly memorable Archers moment. (Jill Nichols on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Many suspected that Jack’s daughter, Hazel Woolley, would soon make an appearance… “with pound signs for pupils”
With the demise of Jack @BBCTheArchers will the unscrupulous Hazel turn up to stake a claim on Jack's ££? (@ChrisButlernhs on Twitter)
Peggy will deal with her... (Tamsin Slatter on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
I just know I am going to love Hazel *claps hands with glee* #thearchers(@LucyLyons on Twitter)
I'd forgotten how evil #Hazel was. The mere mention of her name makes for a shudder #thearchers(@Lodgie_ on Twitter)
Hopefully Jack will leave the lot to Hazel. He did love her, even though she was such a bitch (Bill Gill on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
I certainly haven't heard enough from Hazel. I've been praying for her return for the last 10 years. (Nicky Smith on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Hazel will be filtering through his belongings with pound signs for pupils. We have all met that type. (Lynda Everington on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
After Helen dropped a bombshell over at Bridge Farm, listeners were on tenterhooks waiting to hear Pat’s reaction and omnibus listeners tuned in early. Many berated Pat about her “judgmental” comments – but most think she’s right about Rob
I normally only listen to @BBCTheArchers Omnibus, but tonight I just can't wait. So if you know me don't ring me for at least 20 minutes. (@briansmylie on Twitter)
Oh Pat - did your mother never tell you it takes two to tango? Of course it isn't all Rob's fault. #thearchers (@busydawn on Twitter)
Pat can really be a judgmental old boot! What a po-faced puritan! Can't wait to hear her freak out. #thearchers (@archerslistener on Twitter)
#TheArchers Oh Pat, back off please, Helen's not a child, even if she's acting daft, it's her choice! (@gone2garden on Twitter)
The debate about Rob and Helen’s affair rages on: Is Helen walking into a relationship with a controlling “Menace”? Or will it be happy ever after…? Almost everyone raised an eyebrow when Rob told Helen that Jess knew about their relationship...
@BBCTheArchers silly Helen. He's lying, wake up woman! (@ruthn26 on Twitter)
Oh I do hope he is lying it would be sooo dull if he is telling the truth!! (Rebecca Cox on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
His ability to switch the charm on and off is worrying . My hunch is he is not an honourable man and that poor Helen is in for trouble in the future. (Jayne Ludford on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Did anyone else's flesh contract just a little when Rob told Helen that soon he would be "looking after" her and little Henry? There is just about enough time to run if you start now, Helen! (Ian Berry on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
It doesn't seem to me that H&R have thought through ANY of the practicalities, just want free rein for the raging hormones. Which will inevitably wear off in time, and then what? What chance have they given the humdrum glue that holds relationships together? (Margaret Lesley Gladstone on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
@BBCTheArchers I'm holding my breath as am a sucker and a dead romantic for a happy ending. Here's hoping.... (@SarahSm87877591 on Twitter)
We shall see.. but it will be very interesting to see who in the village decides to throw stones.. given how many of them live in glass houses. (Jo Boulter on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
And finally to “new Tony” – most have welcomed David Troughton to the role saying that it’s a great piece of casting. Some think that he sounds like Rob or Ray – and a few think he sounds a bit like Peter Sallis (though that may have been prompted by the references to cheese!). And there have been many, many thank yous for “old Tony”, Colin Skipp.
Tony regenerated! It's like Doctor Who, but with leeks. (Ellie Kane on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Blimey David Troughton as the new Tony Archer. What brilliant casting on @BBCTheArchers. Good luck to Colin Skipp and David Troughton. :) (@ace_diamond99 on Twitter)
I will really miss you Colin, and The Archers won't sound the same without you being there. All the best and good luck. A very warm welcome to David Troughton to be the new Tony Archer. (Maher Al-Badri on The Archers blog)
Best wishes to Colin Skipp who has played the part so well for many years. An alternative might have been to kill off Tony when he had his heart attack and see how the family managed without him. (Pahnda on The Archers blog)
I've been listening to Colin as Tony for almost as long as he has been playing the part! Enjoy your retirement Colin. I'm glad the character is not going to be killed off - it's a tribute to Colin, and David is also rather gorgeous! (grandmalynne on The Archers blog)
